| Mom2TyZick's Full Review: Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Books |
I believe the old adage "you learn something new everyday." If you are an epinions member, that is especially true! I found out about Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? while in college studying Child Development. All that was discussed in my "Kiddie Lit" class was Eric Carle and his wonderful books! I don't ever remember hearing the name Bill Martin, Jr! Do you know who he is? He's the one who wrote the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?
Bill Martin is an educator as well as an author. One day, after spying one of Carle's bright red lobsters that he'd drawn for an advertisement, Martin called to ask if they could collaborate on a book. That book, fortunately for us all was Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Carle was born in Syracuse, New York in 1929. Carle moved to Germany with his parents in 1935, where he studied at a prestigious Art Institute in Stuttgart. In 1952, he made his way back to New York and began working as a graphic designer. The call from Martin, and the subsequent creation of Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? would launch Eric Carle's career.
Though the writing is important, what makes this book truly wonderful are its illustrations. Eric Carle is the master of collage, the pictures being big, clear and uncomplicated. On the first page of course we see the Brown Bear. He is drawn larger than life, walking across the page. You can even see his 10 sharp black claws! So adorable! And so it goes; on to a Red Bird, A Yellow Duck, a Blue Horse and so on! Each picture is more vibrant than the last with each animal spread fully across two pages. I should also mention that on the next to last page, there are nine children. This is an ethnically diverse group! I'm impressed with this fact, given the book was published in 1967. On the very last page we get a recap of all of the animals (and person) we met through out the book. They are laid out in order, from left to right on both pages, in three lines. As a preschool teacher, I always make a point to put my finger on each one in order to reinforce the left to right movement that is associated with reading.
This book is perfect for the preschool set. I'd have to say that ages 3-5 usually respond to this book the best. It has a repetitive sentence structure that becomes lovingly familiar to children and they, in turn, can actually help you "read" it! This book also has many rhyming pages and once you begin reading it, you will develop a certain cadence that you will use each time, almost like a chant! It is one of the most beloved predictable books on the market!
