| skbreese's Full Review: Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant and Market |
I am normally not a big fan of theme restaurants. However, after roaming around Pier 39 for about 45 minutes, Bubba Gump's Shrimp Company caught my attention. It has a rustic exterior with a souvenir shop just outside the entrance. The souvenir shop has a TV and VCR that runs the movie non-stop. I'm sure the Cashiers can hear it in their sleep. Inside they offer everything from key chains to mouse pads with the Bubba Gump theme.
The restaurant is very large and open with most tables along the North side of the restaurant with a wonderful view of the Bay Bridge, and to the Northwest, a view of Alcatraz Island. The restaurant is decorated with memorabilia from the movie including mounted ping pong paddles, a University of Alabama football uniform, and photography of various scenes from the movie. There is also a distinct shrimp boat theme with fishing nets, buoys, and masts.
The menu contains various seafood choices, and of course, a plethora of shrimp choices including: Cajun BBQ shrimp, Lt. Dan's Drunken Shrimp, Dumb Luck Coconut Shrimp and Bayou Scampi. Other seafood choices include Pacific Northwest Salmon and Bourbon Street Mahi Mahi. For landlubbers, choices include Dixie Style Baby Back Ribs and several steak choices. The menu includes appetizers, desserts, sandwiches, salads and drinks. One specialty drink of note is the Oreo Smoothie. Prices are moderate with most choices under $16.00.
My husband and I split a Shrimp Po-boy sandwich, with a plate full of french fries, coleslaw and New England Clam Chowder in a bread bowl. The food was of average quality and generous quantity. The service was very friendly as the waiters and waitresses asked quiz questions from the movie and encouraged use of the flagging system for signaling their attention, using the "Run Forrest Run" or "Stop Forrest Stop" signs on each table.
We were halfway through our lunch when we noticed a strange looking fellow wandering around the restaurant. He was wearing khaki slacks, a red checkered shirt, a crewcut, and was carrying a brown suitcase. It finally dawned on us that it was Forrest's likeness. This fellow mingled with the diners making conversation in a distinctly Southern accent. He was also seen posing with customer outside the restaurant for photos on the park bench beside the entrance.
The best part of the experience at Bubba Gump's was the great view of San Francisco Bay and the visit from Forrest. I would give the restaurant 3 stars for the food, and 4 stars for atmosphere. It's a fun place to visit, but don't expect gourmet fare.

Notes, Tips or Menu Recommendations Enjoyable dining experience with a family atmosphere, but the food is average. Weekday lunch time is probably the best time to visit to avoid having to wait for a table Best Suited For: Kids and Families
