| shredgirl's Full Review: Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant and Market |
I recently had the pleasure to dine at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. at Pier 39 in San Francisco. Just one of 13 locations across the U.S.A. This is a theme restaurant based on the movie 'Forrest Gump'. There is Forrest Gump memorabilia scattered around and the wait staff will ask Forrest Gump trivia questions. It is a very fun, casual atmosphere. I heard about it from a friend and I had planned on eating there during my stay in San Francisco. Upon arrival, we were seated immediately and my request for a table with a view of the pier was granted. Our party of six was seated at a big round table that overlooked the ocean and Alcatraz. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful as well. The menu was laid out well and detailed which included drinks, appetizers, entrees and desserts. The entree focus is on shrimp but they do have white fish, crab legs, mahi mahi and salmon too. For those non-seafood lovers, they have baby back ribs, steak, chicken and hamburgers (good god). The menu is mainly seafood hence the name "Shrimp Co." Most of the seafood entrees range from $13-17.
First, I ordered a specialty drink called 'Lava Flow', which is a creamy pina colada with strawberries swirled through it. This drink is very good but rich. They have several specialty drinks that all sounded good. Our waitress recommended the 'Delta Sunset' which is their signature raspberry margarita. A couple other drinks are the 'Medal of Honor Margarita' and a vodka drink called 'Bayou Surprise' I also purchased the glass that my drink came in that has the signature Bubba Gump logo on it. The menu will say only two drinks come with the signature glass but if you ask your server you can purchase the glass with any drink you buy. My drink itself was $5.95 but with the glass it was $9.95 but worth it for the Souvenir. After you pay the bill, you take the receipt to the gift shop and they give you a new glass. Specialty Drink prices (without purchasing the glass)range from $4.95 -$6.00.
For an appetizer, my boyfriend ordered the clam chowder. It was a cajun style chowder (although white it was not like New England Clam Chowder). It had a good flavor but had too many potatoes and not many clams.
For dinner, I ordered the 'Dumb Luck Coconut Shrimp'. This dish was out of this world. The shrimp is fried in a sweet batter with real coconut flakes in the batter. The shrimp are huge and the portion is overwhelming. I gave away 5 of my shrimp because I could not possible eat another bite. Everyone else at my table were very impressed with the coconut shrimp. The meal is served with french fries, fresh cole slaw and a cajun marmalade (the marmalade did not taste particularly cajun but was more like a traditional orange marmalade but it did go very well with the shrimp. My boyfriend ordered the "Mama Blue's Southern Charmed Fried shrimp' another excellent dish with plenty of shrimp, about 18. He barely could finish his meal and he had not eaten all day. Everyone at my table had large portions and the food was good all around. Even though the place was totally packed, the food arrived at our table earlier than expected and was hot. (shrimp gets cold fast)
The desserts looked good. Particularly the 'Gumpberry Cobbler' - blackberries, peaches, and apples with raspberry drizzle al a mode for $5.50. Unfortunately we were all too full to try one.
Although we were a party of six, we had separate checks and when the checks arrived, they had already deducted a 15% gratuity. I do not believe they are supposed to do this when the checks are split but at any rate, I usually tip 20% for good food and service, so they lost 5% by automatically deducting the gratuity.
My overall opinion of the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. on San Francisco's Pier 39 was very favorable. The food was excellent and the views were breathtaking. On a scale from 1-10, it gets an 11!
