| blimbach's Full Review: Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant and Market |
Ok, Bubba Gumps in LaHaina, on the island of Maui in Hawaii is not where you get an authentic Hawaiian feeling. But after seeing our umpteenth Hawaiian-type show, our visit to Bubba Gumps was a delightful change.
The restaurant is on the waterfront where you can watch the sun go down over the ocean. It is in the midst of all the tourist shops and restaurants in the quiant town of La Haina which used to be a whaling town. The restaurant is dark, with plank floors and walls and lots of memorabilia from the movie. It is fun to walk around all the rooms to see everything.
The waiters and waitresses all work together so if you need anything, you get it in a second. They have two license plates on the table that you flip from the green to the red one if you need anything. They say Run Forrest Run or Stop Forrest Stop.
Our first waitress was adorable, as are all the young people that work in Hawaii. She was there for just 6 months
before going back to the mainland for graduate school. She
was enthusiastic about EVERYTHING, very refreshing from many people back home.
I ordered the coconut shrimp which was out of this world! I ate 6 of the 8 large shrimp that were coated with a coconut batter and fried. My husband happily ate the ones I could not finish after he ate his own meal of garlicky shrimp. The salad was excellent, crisp with a delightful dressing and the bread was fresh and hot. We did not have room for the desserts which looked wonderful.
We did not have to wait for our table which was elevated from the two other rows of tables so we could all see the sunset. This was worth the price of the meal and drinks alone. Our bill was very reasonable for the quality we received, too.
The gift shop adjoining the restaurant was small but had lots of things I remembered from the movie. Forrest's great sayings were on plaques and all the ways he cooked shrimp were on t-shirts. Remember how he would say "You can fry them, you can boil them, you can ..."? They were not related to Hawaii, but would probably be worn back home more than those bright but beautiful Hawaian shirts or dresses.
I hope we get a Bubba Gumps in the midwest. I would return tomorrow for those great coconut shrimp. I have never tasted better shrimp in my life! Can we go back to LaHaina, sweetie? Please?

Notes, Tips or Menu Recommendations I would not order anything but shrimp which is naturally their specialty. Look around the rooms if you have time. Very clever decorating. Best Suited For: Friends
