Pros: Soft pieces, decent size, inexpensive, super watermelon flavor.
Cons: It has an unmistakable scent, do not get it in your hair.
There are some smells and scents that just scream 'summer'. Coconut always reminds me of suntan lotion, freshly cut grass makes me sneeze but it's always a fresh scent in the air and then there's watermelon. When it comes to watermelon flavored gum there are only two that are even remotely worth getting – Bubble Yum and Hubba Bubba. If I had to choose between the two, Hubba Bubba would win hands down but it is almost impossible to find that flavor here. You would think that Wrigley's would have that stuff in every store possible but that isn’t the case. Bubble Yum, owned and distributed by Hershey's, is a suitable runner up.
Each pack contains five individually wrapped rectangles of gum; there's a modest powder coating to it to keep it from sticking to the wax lined wrapper but that doesn't do anything to the taste of the gum. Pink in color, it is a generous sized piece that allows you to chomp away or blow moderate sized bubbles after a minute or so. There is a little bit of a grainy taste to it when you first start chewing but that breaks down with the heat of your mouth, the chewing action and your saliva. The taste lasts about five minutes at which time to can do one of three things – spit it out and grab another pieces, swallow it or keep chewing. This will get leathery after about ten minutes of chewing. I admit it, I usually swallow it after a couple minutes but rarely feel the need to go back for a second piece unless I had something heavy with garlic and can still taste it.
The taste is not as intense as Hubba Bubba, you can smell that from twenty feet away when someone is chewing it. This has a definite watermelon taste but it isn't something that comes off as overly sweet or fruity [for the record, I just swallowed a piece]. One of the things that puts this a cut about the rest is the smooth chew of it; yes, there is a little bit of a grit to it at first but once you nix that it's smooth chewing. Why can't this top Hubba Bubba? It has a watermelon taste but it isn't oozing with it. If you like to do combo flavors of gum or toss in a second piece when the flavor of the first is starting to die, try the orange or grape if you can find them. If you start out with any flavor and add watermelon to it, it isn't going to be as smooth a transition as if you start out with watermelon then add a second flavor.
You can get these in five piece packs or in a four flavor combo [its not really four flavors because you get two original Bubble Gum packs] and prices vary depending on where you are getting them. The individual pieces are wrapped but not safety sealed so once you open the overpacking, you need to keep it closed up to keep the piece clean and from exposed air. The wax lined paper does a good job of keeping the pieces covered but air exposure will kill them. I usually get these at the candy warehouse in the Strip District. I don't chew a lot of gum but there are times when I want to chomp away on something. Each piece contains 25 calories so if you are hitting this often, those numbers can start adding up. I have never seen a sugar free version of this but I am sure that somewhere it exists.
Please chew responsibly. Don’t spit your gum on the sidewalk. Do you have any idea how hard that is to remove? Did you know that there are people that have to clean that up? I'm dead serious. There is someone who's sole job is to remove gum from sidewalks. Even though this is soft out of the package, it isn't something that I would give to younger kids for a couple reasons – it's got a lot of sugar in it, it is a big piece and when they get bored with it you never know where they are going to stick it. Never get this in your hair; everyone has some quick-cure to remove it but none of them ever worked for me. Like using a blow-dryer in the bathtub, there should be a warning on the package cautioning against chewing this in bed.
