Pros: A main character you can identify with, and a quick and intriguing read.
Cons: I wanted the book to last longer.
This book was a great way to familiarize oneself with what happened to orphan children during the Depression, without making you depressed! I enjoyed the book the whole way through, as did my husband. I am an elementary school teacher, and plan to read this book to my students, as I know they will come away with a little bit of Bud left in them, as he is left in me.
The topic of the Depression is one that is hard to be interested in, much less encourage students to study. We usually just hear about how horrible life was, and realize that we are glad we aren't going through that now. Bud put a real face on the whole period, but Christopher Paul Curtis wrote with such humor and love, that we are almost able to forget the time was set in such a dreadful time.
I would definitely recommend this book to people of all ages. It is a wonderful book to read aloud, or read alone.
