| Bryan_Carey's Full Review: Budweiser |
Ahhhh...Budweiser. It is the world's best selling beer, the King of its class, and the most recognizable name in the malt beverage business. But is Budweiser really worthy of its claim as the King of Beers? Is it ranked #1 because it is a high quality product? Or, is it's number one ranking the result of something else?
Before I answer that question, let me first examine the product itself. Budweiser has a very light golden color and its higher than average carbonation level produces a pretty good amount of foam even though it fizzles away into nothing in a matter of seconds. The aroma of Budweiser, however, leaves a lot to be desired. It has a noticeably pungent smell that is very unappetizing. It does not entice the consumer to start drinking.
The flavor of Budweiser is snappy, with the taste of rice and cereal grains predominating. The taste is an improvement over the smell. There is a bitterness to the finish. I found that Budweiser does taste better the more you drink. I don't know if this is a good quality or a bad quality for a beer to have, but it does taste better the more you consume.
I cannot think of any food in particular that Budweiser would complement very well. It does go well with snacks and lighter foods like fish, but it is certainly not the best. I can think of many other beers that would complement the same foods much better.
Now, let's return to the burning question: Why is Budweiser the best selling beer in the world? Is it because of superior quality or something else? The reasons for Budweiser's high sales volume can be attributed to two things: name recognition and advertising. This phenomenon is similar to the continued success of the Democratic and Republican parties: neither group is all that good or all that respected, but people still support them because of name recognition and constant exposure in the media and press. Budweiser is no different. It is not that great of a product, but extensive national advertising and familiarity have made it the world's most popular beer.
As long as Anheuser- Busch continues to churn out the advertisements, Budweiser will continue to rank high in annual sales. But remember: high sales does not necessarily correlate to a superior product. There are far better products than Budweiser on the market, they just don't have the multi- million dollar advertising budget. These other products might cost an extra dollar per six- pack, but the difference in flavor is worth the money.
Budweiser is an acceptable beer and it is common to find at parties, at restaurants, and at bars all across the land. But widespread availability is about the only good thing I can say for it.
