Pros: Good likeness, articulation, "Vampyr" book...
Cons: Could have used some "librarian" accessories...I didn't dig the transforming feature on this one...
The Bottom Line: If my name were "Rupert," I'd go by "Giles" too...then again, my name is "Quinn"...that's bad enough.

| JediKermit's Full Review: Buffy the Vampire Slayer PALz Rupert Giles |
Of course a toy can be uptight. With all the C-3PO and Bert toys out there, they probably have their own little uptight support group. If they do, this guy can join.
Rupert Giles is Buffy's "Watcher" or mentor in the early seasons of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." His role is primarily expository, but every once in a while they show him in action, training Buffy or fighting vampires alongside her. Later his role expands, but in the first three seasons, he's pretty much her mentor...and the school librarian.
The Giles PALz is in the first series of Buffy PALz, available in stores and online now. The first series includes Buffy, Willow, Xander, Giles, The Master, and Darla--the second series (coming VERY soon) includes Oz, Spike, Drusilla, Cordelia, Jenny Calendar, and another Buffy. So this is a series that's going to be great for fans.
Giles appears as I'd want him to in this first series (based on the first season of the show)..stuffy vest, tie, and tweed jacket...glasses pushed up on his (non-existent) nose, lips pursed disapprovingly... He's fully articulated, like the other PALz in this series, so he has a ball-jointed neck, shoulders, and hips, and then has additional joints at elbow, wrist, knee, ankle, and waist. Sort of like a LEGO guy, with more details and articulation.
Each of the Buffy PALz has a "transforming feature," meaning even though you're getting one little action figure, you also get parts to "transform" them into an alternate version of the character. That works great for characters who are sometimes vampires and have a distinctly different look...or for someone like Buffy who changes their outfits three times a day...for someone like Giles...what do you do? Well, Palisades Toys decided to put him in "training gear"...complete with some body armor and face protecting helmet. It's from an episode where he's training Buffy--or trying to--with quarterstaffs, and two staffs are included. It works okay, but once it's on, looks sort of gimpy, and then he looks very out of place with the other characters. It does include different arms, so you can have him in a "vest" look or his tweed jacket look...but I don't think I'll have him in his training gear ever again. I'm not sure what I would have preferred--really, Giles' look doesn't change until later, when he leaves the school. So it'll have to do.
Besides the training gear included, there's also an exclusive Inkworks trading card and the "Vampyr" book seen in the opening credits of Buffy...I love that teeny tiny book. I would have loved to see something else from the school library--even a little bookshelf or the check-out desk or...something. I dunno.
This is a good figure, and necessary to the line--and he looks great alongside Buffy and her buddies. My only complaint is that the transforming feature just didn't work for me, and it would have been keen to see something tying him back in to the school library.
