Pros: Inexpensive, good if you need protein & weight gain food
Cons: High sodium, contains at least 2% if not more purine levels, high cholesterol
Hello everyone and welcome to my 1st review of 2011 (this makes 281 total if the profile amount is correct) . . .
With the bulk of the holidays left and only one more holiday to go (Orthodox Christmas Eve and day, the 6th and 7th of January) the real heavy spending seems to be behind us, were good for now.
Although during November and December and still ebbing/ flowing into January the family has splurged some on good gourmet kind of foods. I know these are not usually the most nutritious because of high protein or cholesterol (like shrimp) or tons of processed sugar (like those painted xmas cookies !); however we managed to eat like royalty at a fraction of the cost and only come down with a mild case of gout by one of the household members.
To make a long story short we indulged on appetizers like Spanakoppitta, hot crabmeat dip, pita chips, devilled eggs, cheddar cheese and crackers and those yummy (but have purine in them), Bumblee Bee- Premium Select Fancy Smoked Oysters- 3.75 ounces.
Now on to the review . . .
|| ALLERGY NOTE ||
It is not a reaction to a shellfish or salt-water creature that I would be so concerned about when consuming raw or in this case, a Bumblee Bee- Premium Select Fancy Smoked Oysters- 3.75 ounces (although if you experience swelling of face and throat don’t eat of course); but rather what levels of enzymes are in the creature that can exacerbate negative conditions on the body.
An excess of uric acid is caused by eating foods with purine levels over 3% and most of the yummies like chopped liver, sardines, herring, anchovies, shrimp and oysters have over 5% and as much as 20% ! When an individuals uric acid increases by percentages that exceed tolerable levels in their body in accordance with their blood-type, then a condition called gout may occur.
So with caution consume Bumblee Bee- Premium Select Fancy Smoked Oysters- 3.75 ounces sparingly should you have had prior episodes of this excruciatingly painful temporary condition.
|| APPEARANCE ||
They are very dark brown, almost black in a gold-lined can that has a pull-away tab to lift off an aluminum housing. Each oyster measures roughly a ½ inch when elongated head to toe (do oysters have mouths and feet, or brains for that matter ? Oh well . . .).
The oyster meat or bodies are quite slimy when raw and a little less slimy but way more firm when smoked, as Bumblee Bee- Premium Select Fancy Smoked Oysters- 3.75 ounces are. Unlike the anchovy which is a flat fish served rolled, this is simply a flat but plump in middle inside muscle of a shell. Packaged minus the shell and in their own natural juice plus the two only ingredients in here.
|| COST ||
This solely and exclusively in some areas depends on the merchant selling these cans of gems. Now fresh and smoked yourself are far better as you control the ingredients; however with the cost at roughly $3.oo for ½ dozen or less if the local fish market is truly friendly, you can make a lot of stuff with that amount of oysters.
I think we paid a little less than $2.oo at the grocery store for Bumblee Bee- Premium Select Fancy Smoked Oysters- 3.75 ounces brand and needed two cans, one for eating the other for oyster stuffing in the turkey.
|| DIRECTIONS ||
Since these are already smoked to perfection and all the bacteria is evaporated in the process, what you have left can be eaten directly out of the tin OR placed along side lettuce, used in stews (preferably fish or shellfish stews), casseroles, or even saute them, bake them in their own shells for the Rockefeller version or like I said, right from the tin . . . On some crackers !
|| INGREDIENTS ||
Probably the most simple and easy to pronounce contents of ANY food besides cheese, that I have reviewed here. Three ingredients and the first is , well what do you know OYSTERS !
How about that, a product that has what it says it is in there. Anyway, enough humor there is also salt and cottonseed oil in here. The salt is not good for us and interestingly enough the label does not mention if source is table salt (NaCl) or sea salt usually loaded with nutritional values of potassium chloride.

|| NEGATIVES ||
Of course over indulgence on anything that is either delicious or so-called sinful will get the body, mind and spirit into trouble but the human race is full of flaws and food temptations is one of our worst.
Yes they taste great; yes they serve well with others; but the oyster can be a deadly cause of the worst case of gout (more specifically the smoked salmon also) one would ever want.
So eat Bumblee Bee- Premium Select Fancy Smoked Oysters- 3.75 ounces sparingly, will ya !
|| POSITIVES ||
These little gems from the sea are priceless to those trying to keep synthetic anemic drugs out of their system OR wish to increase their protein levels without too much cause for alarm in the raising of BP due to high salt content. There is a balance when you are trying to maintain balance, get it.
For the weight gain and protein metabolism for healthy circulation and nutrition at a cellular level, this food is nearly perfect and if it were less in the bad cholesterol, more people would consume these heartily.
|| SMELL ||
Like they were just pulled from a grand smoker filed with assortments of mesquite and smoky flavorings AND simply of the sea she or he (how do you determine if your consuming little boy or girl oysters, hee hee ?) came from. The salt and sea-smell is just in there. Not mild I might add either as the cats from the living room smelled the waft Bumblee Bee- Premium Select Fancy Smoked Oysters- 3.75 ounces of oysters soon as the lid was pulled back.
|| STORING ||
Since these sea-gems are in a tin can lined with a plasticote gold lining and tightly packed in natural juice, I am guessing the shelf life is years and years. However I do recommend storing in a cool and dry space like a pantry shelf in the basement.
|| TASTE ||
OMG--- these are one of the best for smoked oysters in a can. I guess for the price I am definitely blessed again because the taste is remarkable. Nothing but succulent essence of the seas smaller gems.
Salty, smoky and oceany, if that’s a word. There are notes of subtle cherry and mesquite flavors blended with a less subtle meaty flavor without having any mammal/ animal protein other than musculature and tissues and a hard shell to keep the inside yummies, protected. Usually the shells accompany the moist insides when an Oysters Rockefeller appetizer is served.
|| WARNING ||
On the box of this product there is a caution about maybe shells are still attached to the Bumblee Bee- Premium Select Fancy Smoked Oysters- 3.75 ounces individual oysters; if that is the case, remove before eating. Also as far as diets, I do suggest consulting your doctor should there be any contraindications with any meds you are on OR any dietary restrictions you may be breaking.
|| FINAL NOTE/ OVERALL RECOMMENDATION ||
I cannot say enough about taste, appearance, texture (not rubbery or too slimy at all) and of course versatility ! If the protein is what you are after, its in one. I find Bumblee Bee- Premium Select Fancy Smoked Oysters- 3.75 ounces less expensive than a protein drink that can be chalky, expensive and futile if it takes three-to-four hours to metabolize.
These are instant gratification offering a nutritious boost and taste temptation you just can‘t resist, well at least this single female cannot resist !
So what are you waiting for and oh here is to aphrodiasiac-ing . . .
Thank you for reading
and Enjoy !
Merry Christmas to fellow Eastern Orthodox worshippers
