johnr55's Full Review: Bunn BT10B 10-Cup Coffee Maker
This is my third Bunn over the past 20 years. Nothing was wrong with my last one, which I gave to my sister. I'll admit that at times I would forget the warmer was on and would come back to that stinky, smelly gunk cooked in the bottom of the carafe. In fact, I had been known to turn around and return home after leaving, just to confirm I'd cut the thing off. Therefore, when I passed this Bunn in my local Lowe's with the thermal carafe, I bought it on the spot. I had a thermal Oster in the 80's that I loved until I dropped the carafe and broke the liner. I liked the fact that this carafe was all metal. I work a fair amount of the time out of a home office and also liked the idea of having the carafe on my desk. I also drive quite a bit and liked the idea of taking the carafe in the car with me.
How has it been? Mixed, at best. I don't understand why Bunn persists in putting that plastic intake plate on their home machines, as it will inevitably splash some out. Their commercial pourovers usea screen like window screen and it doesn't do this.
Additionally, this carafe is a real dribbler. It dribbles pouring the water in and often dribbles pouring coffee out. Not something I've found with their glass ones.
The worst, though, is that the carafe simply doesn't keep the coffee that hot, that long. Unlike glass-lined thermal carafes, this one will start losing its heat in 10-15 minutes, forcing people to heat their coffee in the microwave. After 30 minutes, it's way down. Yes, I know I can soak the carafe with hot water, but doesn't that negate the speed that I bought Bunn for in the first place? I've never taken the temp but go by my tongue, and the difference is very noticeable. I live alone, so I can often drink a pot over an entire morning at home. By the end of the morning the coffee is barely warm. So, what's worse, burned-flavor coffee that's been overheated or cold coffee? You decide.
Though I wash my carafe religiously with soap and water between each pot, it started staining brown on the inside and I have used a Brillo pad to bring it back to looking like new.
I thought I would like taking the carafe with me in the car, until it turned over on the seat, making a real mess. My fault, though, not the pot's.
In summary, if you drink coffee faster than I do, or if you have multiple drinkers, you may love this pot. If you drink more slowly, alone, as I usually do, you will not.
Incidentally, I've tried to get my sister to trade my old Bunn back for this one and she refuses, having had to heat her coffee at my house!
