| robndea's Full Review: Bunn GR Series Home Coffee Brewer |
One would hope after 45 years on this earth I would learn a bit of patience...and in some things I have. I almost never barge into the men's restroom because the line at the ladies is too long...I rarely order steak rare/rare just so it will be delivered quicker...and I can travel for nearly five miles in the "slow" lane of the freeway without feeling the need to "pass" the car ahead. But when it comes to my java-jones...that's a horse of a different color!
Not only am I chronically impatient, but I also tend toward the cheap side. I have purchased several coffee makers over the years, and have struggled with the "slow-coffee vs. new-coffee maker" dilemma whenever the old maker begins to fade (my former coffee maker was up to 21 minutes to complete a pot). In our house we lined up at the coffee maker, fighting one another for the privilege to hold our cups beneath the outflow as the pot was "dripping" in a sad attempt to get one full cup before rushing out the door to start the day. The problem with that, I've found, is the first person in line gets a cuppa that will stand your hair on end, while the last one gets a cup of hot, brown water.
I was visiting my brother one day, complaining that I was never the coffee "Baby-bear", whose cup was JUuuust Right! It seemed I always got the cup that was too strong or too weak. My brother just shook his head at me and asked why I didn't just break down and buy a Bunn.
"Too expensive", I replied (remembering that Bunn was a top of the line name for coffee makers back in my restaurant days). "You're just too cheap to pay for quality" was all he said as I watched him brew up a fresh pot of coffee in less than two minutes. My interest was piqued.
The next time I was shopping at a discount store, I was pleasantly surprised to find a Bunn coffeemaker for less than $50.00. There were some lower priced brands nearby, and I waffled for nearly 20 minutes trying to decide if I wanted the really, really, cheap machine (that looked suspiciously like my 21 minute pot at home) for $28.00 or whether I would "splurge" and go for the $45.00 Bunn. I went all out...and haven't regretted it...not even once.
The coffee maker has a reservoir of water that is heated once and held at a warm temperature that allows the hot water to be immediately available for brewing. In other makers, the water has to be heated for each pot, and as the pot gets older, the times get longer and longer. This was a bit confusing to my husband because to make the FIRST pot, one has to pour in the water, wait and then pour in another container of water, which "pushes" the hot water through. After that initial pot, however, you just use the handy water pitcher to refill the reservoir and push the hot water through. The hot water reservoir on the Bunn maker can be turned off during those times when you won't be making coffee every day - during vacations, for example.
The coffee maker is so fast, that Bunn provides a pitcher to use to pour the water into the reservoir. Trust me - you should use it...trying to use the coffee pot as a water pitcher results in a quick and hot ....mess.
This is BY FAR the best coffee machine I've ever owned. No more waiting in line for a cup that is too strong or too weak. No more end runs around my husband as he turns to grab a coffee mug from the shelf. Nope, this sleek, black Bunn coffeemaker is one of my best buys in quite some time.
