| patch3boys's Full Review: Bunn-O-Matic Corporation 8-cup Replacement Carafe ... |
For the last 8 years, my morning coffee has been brewed from my Bunn -O- Matic Coffee Maker. Like most people, once I experienced that "2 minute brew" that Bunn offers, there was no going back. Just the thought of having to wait those 15-20 agonizing "single drip" minutes again (especially when I have just been dragged out of my bed by a stampede of kids) makes me want to cringe. Nope, it is Bunn or Bust in this house!
Even the actual coffee "pot" for this coffee maker is made extremely well. I used to brag about how this pot was unbreakable. I can't tell you the number of times that my pot hit the side of the sink or the counter top while I was carelessly doing my business. And I am not talking about slightly grazing the sink or countertop. I had managed to whack it pretty hard a couple of times and still, no cracks or breaks.
However, dropping it on the ground is a different story. My luck ran out with my "unbreakable" coffee pot on the day that I slipped in a puddle of milk on my kitchen floor and sent the pot smashing into the dishwasher. I guess everything has its limits.
Knowing that I couldn't go a morning without the use of my coffee pot, I sent my husband out that evening to pick us up a replacement. Of course he comes home with the first generic replacement pot that he came across. "There is no darn difference in this pot than the other except that it costs a lot more!" he insisted. So, I used it because it was all I had. I hated it. It never did fit right on the coffee maker, it spilled my coffee all over the counter each time I poured a cup and the glass was so cheap and thin that I literally felt that I had to walk on egg shells each time I carried it for fear of hitting it against something and breaking it. It just didn't have the same quality as what I was used to with my Bunn.
So, I "over ruled" the old man and went down and purchased the actual Bunn replacement pot for my Bunn coffee maker. True it was more money than the several generic ones that they had for sale, but to me, it was more than worth it.
What makes the design so much better and different from the others?
The shape
The Bunn coffee pot has a very sleek and round shape. Many other pots are more square and bulky. The slim curvy shape makes moving your coffee pot from burner to cup and back to burner again, very smooth. You don't have to tug at your pot or lift up on your pot to remove it from the burner. The rounded edges make it easy to slide in, out and around.
The handle
With both my original Bunn coffee pot (which I owned for around 7 years before I had to replace it) and with my new replacement Bunn pot, I have never had a problem with the handle becoming even slightly loose. I have experienced this with a few other coffee pots that I have owned in the past, so I was happy that this wasn't a problem with my Bunn.
The handle is nice and long to get a good, firm grip while picking it up and is attached very well. The way it works is that there is a round metal piece that wraps around the top of the pot (above the body of the pot and under the lip) that secures to the handle. I have never had to tighten this piece once. It has stayed firm and tight the entire time. However, if this ever does become a problem, the handle has a screw (where the metal ring connects to the handle) that can be used for adjustment. But to date, I have never had to mess with it.
Pouring your coffee
I really don't know why but for some reason I don't have a problem with spills or leaks when pouring from this coffee pot. Many I have used in the past will cause coffee to spill down the side of your cup or onto the counter if you do not pour it just right, but I haven't experienced that with this pot. The lip or spout for whatever reason is designed really well. I didn't think to look at the difference when I had my generic replacement to compare the two, but I wish I had of to see why this design works better. However, I have found that if I try to pour without the lid on or with the lid not in the appropriate position, I do have some spills and excess drip. But if the lid is on correctly (which is usually is since you keep it on while brewing your coffee) I never have a problem with spills or leaks.
Is there anything that I do not like about the Bunn Replacement Coffee Pot?
I don't have many complaints at all. It would be nice if it shared the same low price as some of the generic replacement pots, but given the higher quality of this pot all around, I was more than willing to pay a few dollars more to get this replacement.
Overall I have found the Bunn coffee pots to be top quality. The two things that I feel stand out and make this pot better than the rest is the fact that the glass is made very thick and sturdy (which I consider very important, especially if you are a klutz like me) and the sleek design which makes moving your coffee pot around very simple and easy. This is overall the best coffee pot (and maker) I have ever used. I will not be switching any time soon.
