| rmgood's Full Review: Burley D'Lite |
I recently bought a slightly older version of this bike trailer and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. The five-point harness provides safety that some other trailers simply do not offer. And it is roomy enough for two small children to ride comfortably in (plus added room for cargo such as a diaper bag).
The sides are very durable which provides two strong advantages over most other brands on the market. First, the fabric is pulled tight enough so little fingers can't poke through or stretch it out and get caught in the wheels. Second, if the trailer were to somehow tip over, the sides are strong enough to soften the fall to the ground.
Probably the biggest advantage to this particular bike trailer is the quick release hitch (a patented Burley design). I have personally tested this hitch since my daughter's safety is my primary concern and I am still a novice at bike riding. So I hitched up the trailer (without my daughter in it as if that wasn't already obvious), took off on a little joy ride and purposely tipped over my bike. (Boys and girls, don't try this at home!) Just as promised, the trailer stayed perfectly upright with hardly a jolt.
So you want to know the catch right? Well, if you buy the latest model, the only catch is the price which averages over $300! If you buy an older version, the catch is that it doesn't fold up which confines you to travels near your home unless you have a large vehicle to haul the trailer in. I bought an older, used version for $50. When I took it to the bike shop for a once over, I was told that I got this for a steal because they sell used Burley's for about $200! Also, I learned that you can purchase any replacement part on the trailer right from the bike shop. Burley makes it very easy to replace any part that needs to be. (Unlike some other manufacturers who conveniently discontinue certain parts over the years.)
Burley also offers a very nice conversion kit which transforms the bike trailer into a jogger stroller in a matter of seconds. I have this conversion kit and find it very simple to use. And I use the jogger much more often than I initially imagined I would!
The wheels are sturdy and large, providing this trailer with a smooth ride. And it has a low center of gravity for added safety. Overall, I would highly recommend this trailer to anyone looking to invest in this type of equipment. Burley is definitely the safest on the market.
On last note (even very obvious things never hurt to be reinforced): Even in the safest bike trailers, children should always wear a bicycle helmet that is designed to fit their head well for both safety and comfort.
