modernmarvel's Full Review: Burts Bees Baby Bee, Diaper Ointment With Vitamin ...
I am on my third child and have had lots of experience with all kinds of diapering products. For diaper cremes, I usually stick with brands I know such as Balmex and Desitin but I got this brand as a gift and decided to try it.
WHOA!!
The first thing I noticed, and the first thing everyone else notices, is the very, very strong scent. This scent is so strong you can smell baby in the room through her diaper and clothes. The smell goes away after a few hours but I don't use this diaper creme if I know we are going out or we will be near someone sensitive to the smell. In that case, we go without diaper creme or, if we really need it, we use Balmex which is the least smelly of the bunch.
WHAT IS THAT SMELL?
The diaper creme smells like diaper creme - sort of like Desitin - and is somewhat unpleasant. There is rosemary, lavender, candula, chamomile, rose petal and comfrey root in the diaper creme. However, the smell is definitely not herbal - the smell reminds me of a medical-type smell.
OUR EXPERIENCE - IT WORKS
This cream does work. I use it occasionally after the bath when baby's tushie is nice and clean and it seems to prevent diaper rash although I think frequent changings are the most effective way to fight diaper rash. We did have one small bout of diaper rash and one application completely cleared up the small amount of redness.
Baby seems to like this diaper creme although she doesn't talk yet so it is hard to tell. She doesn't seem to prefer this brand over other brands.
PACKAGING
I think the main thing that distiguishes this product from its competitors is the cute packaging. The tube is fairly small (1.75 ounces). It has a cute honey comb pattern on it. The box tube came in a box that is also is attractive. The tube has a flip top lid so groggy sleep deprived parents can not loose the cover.
The attractive packaging and thoughtful design make this diaper cream a nice, practical addition to a baby gift. That is how I got mine.
I think this is a great diaper cream if you can get past the smell. I don't mind the smell but I know others might so we tend to use it after bath and before bed. I keep Balmex around too so we have an alternative for outings.
The cream is about as effective as the other brands of diaper cream that we have used.
UPDATE MARCH 2004
I used this diaper creme on some really heavy duty diaper rash and thought it worked really, really well. It coated baby's bottom better than other cremes and lasted longer. The smell is still an issue for me but I think it works better than other brands. I had originally given this product 4 stars but am increasing it to 5.
