jdhauer's Full Review: Burt's Bees Beeswax Lip Balm
My daughter is addicted to lip balm. She first became hooked when she was about eighteen months old. She had cracked, dry, chapped lips so I applied a little bit of Vaseline to her lips. It's now part of her daily routine to have Tigger ChapStick applied each morning before we leave for school.
My expectations for the tin and the tube of Burt's Beeswax Lip Balm were extremely low. As usual, Burt's Bees managed to fall far short of those expectations. That's saying a lot because all I wanted was something to protect my lips and hopefully keep them soft. I started out with non-chapped, non-cracked, absolutely normal lips.
What I finished with was not a pretty sight.
To begin, the lip balm comes in both a tube and a tin format. The formulation is a little different for each. Neither has any SPF protection. There's more product in the tin (.3 oz) versus the tube (.15 oz), but based upon the results, I don't understand why you'd want either one.
I started my experimentation with the tin. The tin is similar to that used for Burt's Bees Lemon Butter Cuticle Creme, Burt's Bees Hand Salve and Doctor Burt's Res-Q Ointment. I twisted the lid off of the tin and rubbed my finger on the lip balm. The consistency is the same as the above listed products. The scent is similar to the Hand Salve but less offensive. Then I rubbed my finger on my lips. I immediately felt a slight stinging sensation and my lips felt less moist. Lip balm should not sting, especially when applied to healthy lips.
Next, I tried the tube. The product has the same consistency as ChapStick and smells like Wrigley's Doublemint chewing gum. I twisted the balm up to rub it on my lips. It felt waxy and my lips immediately started to burn, terribly. This wasn't a simply sting but serious pain. Lip balm should not be painful! I started trying to wipe the stuff off my mouth but it wasn't budging. I scraped at it and ended up actually drawing blood trying to get the stuff off my lips.
I can't imagine applying this on lips that are already cracked, dry or chapped. If I had this experience with healthy lips, the very thought of using it on lips that need help is rather disturbing.
I had every intention of throwing both products in the trash but I was distracted from doing so. They sat on my nightstand for a couple of days. Then, my daughter discovered the tube of "Bee ChapStick" and applied it herself. The screams she let loose were bloodcurdling. She sobbed and screamed and I did my best to try and get the stuff off her face.
I was about ready to call Burt myself and give him an earful. I chose not to do that and to write this review instead. We are now Bee-free!
