Burt's Bees lip balm burns me up. OUCH!

Pros:Natural product that works if you can use it.

Cons:Peppermint oil.

The Bottom Line: Burt's Bee lip balm is great if you can use peppermint. If you are sensitive to peppermint, you will hate it.

I love Burt’s Bees products, but I don’t use the lip balm. Even though the lip balm is the first and the most popular of the entire line, it burns me up. And, I do mean literally. It contains peppermint oil, and I am sensitive to that.

Peppermint is a fabulous herb overall. It is supposed to be healing and soothing both physically and emotionally. Things like irritable bowel syndrome are said to be helped by taking or smelling this scent. I will just have to take everyone’s word for that.

If you wonder what I mean about being sensitive to peppermint, then I would say that it ranks up there with Ben Gay. While I would put Ben Gay on my shoulder, I would sure avoid putting it on my lips, near my eyes, or heaven-forbid eating some of it. Ben Gay isn’t meant to be used in those ways, but peppermint generally is.

If you are sensitive to peppermint, then you probably know it. If you got hold of those Christmas candy canes or mints at restaurants and had to spit them out, then you know what I’m talking about. If I brush my teeth with paste including peppermint, I can finish the job. But, if I stick my tongue out, it will be quivering. Not in a good way either. I just go with Aim toothpaste, which does not have peppermint, and I ask for the kid’s bubble gum flavor at the dentist office, since they go big for mint everywhere I’ve been.

When I got Burt’s Bee lip balm, I didn’t realize it had peppermint. I rubbed that on good, and my lips started to burn-tingle. OUCH! OUCH! I rubbed and rubbed, but I had burny lips all day. I thought maybe I was the only person on earth who reacted that way to peppermint oil, but my boss said that his wife couldn’t use the lip balm either. Scoopmorris (who writes here at Epinions-- http://www.epinions.com/user-scoopmorris —check her out) told me it was too strong too, so I think she is sensitive to peppermint but probably not as much as I am.

On the plus side, BB lip balm has bee’s wax, which coats and protects. I do love that part of the recipe. And, I would use the balm if they took the peppermint oil out. I think maybe they have a balm now without it. It says fruit flavored, so I might try that. I would want to check the list though and make sure I don’t get more peppermint mixed with that fruit.

If you are sensitive to peppermint, then you want to know that the lipsticks also have that included. I got the cute little trial set, and those burned me up too. You would think I would have checked, but I never heard of lipstick with peppermint.

One thing I will say for the company is that they do listen and respond. I emailed about the peppermint, and they wrote a nice email back. They offered to take back my lipsticks and give me something else or my money back. I didn’t do that. I just gave the unused ones to friends who can tolerate peppermint (which includes most people). The lip balm, I just tossed. It wasn’t very expensive, and I didn’t think it was a bad product—only bad for me.

On the five scale they have here at Epinions, I would say that the lip balm is 5 for most folks but 1 for anyone who can’t tolerate peppermint. That will come out to a 3 but with those notes. The balm comes in a tube or a tin. Buy the tube first since it’s less expensive. If that works out, then the tin is a good idea.

If they offer lip products without peppermint, then I’ll buy some. I’ve been very happy with the BB line of products.

My all-time favorite lotion is Burt’s Bees carrot lotion. Great softening. Wonderful scent.

If you have chapped hands, then the tinned hand salve in good.

Bag Balm is a cheaper “fix” for hurting hands though, and it’s the best I’ve tried.

“Guess What Shania Twain does with her Bag Balm” is my review on that product and can be viewed at: http://www.epinions.com/content_40393084548
