Pros: I like the smell, multipurpose, convenient, soothing
Cons: Getting salve out of the tin can be messy
The Bottom Line: Burt's Bees makes a fabulous line of natural, safe and environmentally friendly products; this hand salve is wonderful and wonderfully natural!
I really love natural and healthy products, from inside the body to out. On first impression, it was clear that Burt’s Bees products are all about being natural. After all, they are Earth Friendly All Natural Personal Care Products.
One of the first products I sampled in their product line is the Hand Salve. Although this review is based on the 3 oz. (85 g) container, keep in mind that they offer a tiny sample size tin (.30 oz) if you just want to try out the product in a smaller size.
Scent
When you open the tin, the first thing you’ll notice is the scent. I would attribute this to the rosemary, comfrey, and eucalyptus in the product. It’s sort of a strong minty flavor. To me, it’s not medicinal, because natural ingredients are simply that, and I don’t associate them with medicine. I like the smell, and most often find herbals to be soothing.
After applying the Hand Salve, I didn’t find the scent to be overwhelming or noticeable. It’s sort of a light and lingering scent, but not overpowering.
The Container
The tin boasts a picture of who else, but Burt on the front. There truly is a Burt, hence the name of the company!
Along the lines of lip balms and containers of this sort, I always find it frustrating to actually get to the product. In this case, I usually gouge out some of the product with the top of my fingernail. Otherwise you’ll have to rub your fingers over the salve, which doesn’t gather up too much of it.
The top of the container simply lifts off. When you purchase the product, there should be a seal around the edges of the container, insuring that the salve isn’t exposed to anything before purchase.
Even though the lid is just lifted off the bottom, I have no problem with the container staying together or being pulled apart.
The Salve
The back of the tin states: Our all-purpose protective hand salve is made with botanical oils, herbs and beeswax, specifically formulated to deeply penetrate dry, chapped hands and other areas that need extra moisturizing. For best results, gently massage the salve into skin daily before and after gardening and other outdoor activities.
Similar to other balms and salves on the market, Burt’s Bees Hand Salve works the same way. You apply it to dry or chapped areas, or as you see need fit.
Although the Hand Salve might appear greasy, I didn’t find it particularly oily. It’s almost like lip balm for your hands. Although it goes on a bit shiny, it will be absorbed.
My favorite use is for when I have an injury that’s healing. I’m an outdoor kind of person, and at times find myself riddled with cuts and scrapes. Once something starts healing, it’s those itchy scabs (sorry!) that need some care. The salve seems to soothe these areas and provides moisture for comfort and healing.
I think this salve can be used in instances of dryness or just as something nice to put on your skin. It’s different from lotion, because it isn’t so much of a watery base. This is like a concentrated application. A little bit goes a long way, and a tin of Burt’s Bees Hand Salve will go a long way.
Although this is marketed as hand salve, there are plenty of uses for this product. I would definitely recommend it for dry elbows or knees, maybe feet, wounds that have closed and are healing, and much more.
I bought my tin of Burt’s Bees Hand Salve for about $6.00. It’s listed on their website for $6.50. The little tiny tin was priced at about $2.00. I felt the price is reasonable, and comparable to other similar products.
Where to buy?
I’m fortunate enough to have a giant health food store near me that carries the Burt’s Bees products. However, they don’t always have what I need, and I’ve lived in places that don’t have the products. That’s where their website comes in handy. The prices are quite reasonable, and you can always use the website to do some research on products.
