Despite the intense scent, this stick can work wonders
Written: Jan 26 '04 (Updated Jan 26 '04)
Product Rating:
Pros: effectively does what it claims to do: zap zits
Cons: horrifying smell, hard to "aim," not really a stick, pricey
The Bottom Line: Despite my issues with the Blemish Stick, I have to highly recommend it: quite simply, with enough patience and time, it did for me exactly what it claimed to do.

Backstory
My skin, a nightmare. My face had worsened since I'd begun using a popular, harsh, expensive skincare system. Painful cysts were under my skin, and worst of all, my zits were chapped and peeling. Finally, I shoved the skincare products under my bed, went to the grocery store, and decided to attempt an all-Burt regime. As an afterthought, I grabbed a Burt's Bees Herbal Blemish Stick (aka "Parsley Blemish Stick"), you know, sort of as a potential quick-fix in an emergency.
What Burt's Bees Advertises
The Blemish Stick contains eleven salient ingredients that "spot-cleanse" blemishes and otherwise "normalize" skin. (In short, it's a topical zit-zapper.) .30 oz, featuring a slew of natural ingredients including calendula, yarrow, parsley, willowbark, tea tree, juniper, and eucalyptus. The folks at Burt's suggest applying the Blemish Stick to your blemish 3-4 times daily; I've only ever used it 1-2 times daily, and that seems to be just enough.
My First Impressions
First thing's first: "stick" is a misnomer. The "stick" is a glass tube full of a concentrated drying formula, and you roll it on like deodorant. Now, it's not weird to have a product like this in liquid form, as plenty of other cosmetics companies have done the same (BeneFit's comparable "Boo Boo Zap!", also in a glass tube, comes to mind). But being told it's a "stick," and then getting a roll-on test tube of liquid, can be surprising and off-putting. (It's a cute glass tube, though. Probably dangerous to put in your pocket or purse, though, which is too bad.)
Second, I noticed the smell. Ugh. It smells weird and woodsy--definitely the odors that come through are the combined efforts of calendula, tea tree, and eucalyptus. I don't know if you can put those smells together mentally, but it's pretty unbelievable.
Last, I noticed that, if I had a small cut or raw spot on my face, using the Blemish Stick would definitely help me find it. Ow. Plus, since it's a roll-on stick, it's sort of hard to "aim" precisely for your zit, if that makes sense.
Put to the Test!
One night during my Burt's Experiment, I was washing my face and found (horrors!) a new, painful, deep, incredibly depressing zit. Just one, but one was enough. I washed my face as usual, then uncapped the "stick" and ran it back and forth over my chin, swearing.
In the morning, I washed my face as usual, felt for the zit (it was still there, and OUCH), then ran the Blemish Stick over my chin again. I waited for the liquid to dry, then applied makeup as usual. And that night, I felt for the zit (it was there), washed, applied the stick.
The next morning, I washed, felt for my zit and, in fact, it was completely gone. I was blown away.
I have never had a deep, painful zit like that go away in two days. But it seems that, coupled with an undeterred, even militant facial-cleansing methodology, the Herbal Blemish Stick can do exactly what it purports to do. Not bad.
