I am a huge proponent of natural and safe alternatives to common pesticides that are on the market. As a parent of two young children who are very active and enjoy outdoor activities I have found that finding alternatives to battle mosquito's is quite a challenge. I found myself weighing the dangers of mosquito bites and tick exposure versus using common products containing deet.
Deet is a substance that is easily absorbed into the bloodstream through the skin and NOT recommended for children or pregnant women. This of course depends on who is doing the recommending as many people would probably tell you deet is "harmless". The controversy surrounding the use of deet and other pesticides and the dangers they pose could be debated, however, I am quite convinced of their harmful effects on children. Our family is pesticide sensitive so I choose to strictly use alternatives in our home and on our bodies.
Burt's Bees Lemon Grass Insect Lotion has provided me with a solution that has me BUZZING a happy tune. This formula provides protection for my children and is effective even in a woodsy environment. We use this lotion camping, at the beach, in our backyard at dusk.
We no longer are subjected to that overpowering smell of chemical but enjoy the sweet lemony smell from a natural extract of lemon grass. The fragrance is pleasant, the lotion smooth and refreshing and the burning sensation present with most other sprays and lotions is eliminated. The most important element of this product is that it contains NO TOXIC SUBSTANCES! Now isn't that an original idea for a product used on children?
There are many naturally occurring solutions to pest management readily available today. They do take a little more time and research than just snatching a product off the shelf. I find that effort well expended for the health and well being of my children. Burt's Bees uses a combined formula of lemongrass, citronella, and comfrey which effectively prevents you from being a mosquito's main course. (Citronella repels ticks)
I have also used tea tree oil to repel insects including mosquitos. Tea tree oil is a stock item at your health food store. It has many uses (great for dandruff, hair loss, fungus control, rashes) and is very effective for repelling all insects. (even lice) The smell is not as pleasant as lemon grass but for a quick fix it works wonderfully.
CONCLUSION:
Burt's Bees Insect repellent has provided the protection we needed in the battle of the bugs. I would highly recommend this product to anyone, even those of us who seem to attract mosquito's more than others. Put away your heavy toxic smelly sprays and try this sweet smelling effective repellent. I think you will thank me!
