Natural is the best, right? Isn’t this the direction things are heading today, back to a more natural, organic way? Are all of the chemicals that make up everyday things causing some of our health concerns today? Who knows…but, I do know that I am doing quite a bit to get back to more basics and more natural items. I chose more organic or natural cleaners and make up and foods. Why should lip gloss or protection be any different?

In comes Burt’s Bees products. I sure hope the buy out by Clorox recently doesn’t impact the natural process and ingredients that Burt’s Bees chose to use when making their products.

I love virtually everything made by Burt’s Bees and would recommend their items. The lip shimmer is a nice way to get some color without the chemicals that a lot of lipsticks generally contain.

The Ingredients

Per the label, it states this product is 100% natural and it is NOT tested on animals and the tube it is stored in is made of 92% post-consumer recycled plastic. The ingredients are as follows:

Sunflower oil, Castor oil, beeswax, candelilla wax, lanolin, cocoa seed butter, tocopheryl acetate & tocopherol (vitamin E), peppermint oil, carnauba was, rosemary leaf oil.

They state that this may also contain the following items:

Iron oxide, mica, carmine or titanium dioxide

The Shimmer

I enjoy the color selections that Burt’s Bees offers. The colors normally seem to be more earthy tones, like Merlot, Nutmeg, Rhubarb, etc. I have yet to find an unnatural color sold in the lip shimmers.

When using the product, it glides on my lips smoothly. It helps protect my lips from chapping. I have noticed when using the lip shimmer, it makes my lips feel a bit warm. It’s not painful or irritating, but for some it may be an annoyance.

The colors that I have used have looked nice and not gaudy or atrocious. They color is light if you apply a light coat or it can be a stronger color if you apply a heavier coat (like most lipsticks).

I am currently using the Nutmeg color and it’s a light bronzy look almost. It’s sheer, where you really can still see my natural lip color shining through with a shiny metallic sheen of nutmeg/bronze. It’s light and not tremendously dark and it’s a color I truly enjoy wearing.

Suggestion if you do purchase these lip shimmers, do NOT carry them in your pant’s pocket or leave them in your car if it’s hot outside. The product will get extremely soft and it will not apply very well to your lips. Matter of fact, it will actually clump up if it’s too soft.

The color is sparkly but sheer. I guess per their tubes, they call their product “luminescent and sheer color”. I would say that fits nicely.

The tubes are only .0975 of an ounce or 2.6 g. But, they last quite a while. I thought they would be gone after about 10 uses, but I have been using my tube of nutmeg daily for almost a month. I usually will only apply it once or maybe twice a day.

It does transfer to straws or the rims of your coffee or water cups. If you drink a lot, you may have to reapply more frequently. And, also, it depends on how much color and coverage you like to have on your lips.

Overall Impression

The product, to me, is excellent. I have used a number of different tubes, enjoyed the colors, the smell and the appearance of the product on my lips. I especially enjoy that they do not test on animals, that the tube itself is made up of 92% post-consumer recycled plastic and that it’s 100% natural. That says a lot to me.

If you are looking for a product to protect your lips, give you good color and is refreshing, this is a product that you really should try!
