Burton Moto's: Snow boot supremacy

Written: May 24 '03 (Updated May 24 '03)
Pros:High quality, low price, good insulation, pull string liner.
Cons:Liner can be a touch difficult to loosen from time to time.
The Bottom Line: Best boot under $150?! Quite possibly

If it has not become apparent to you from my last three submissions to this category let me make it clear: I am an absolute snowboard freak It’s not a hobby, it’s an obsession. My passion is for the mountains. My problems and aggravations are left behind at the lift. Until I’m behind the wheel of a car, Snowboarding is my only freedom.

As most already know, I am not a high-budgeted snowboarder per se. I really can’t afford to throw away $200+ just for a single pair of boots (which in most cases last only a season or two). But it tends to be difficulty to find a solid pair of boots for a low affordable price. And unless you’re a beginner, it will be hard to find a pair under about $130 that includes a liner. And trust me, for an advanced rider; a liner is oh so important for optimum performance and comfort. We who else but Burton would make it their goal to construct and expert level boot for a beginner sized budget. Enter the Burton Motos.

Price: Well then, with most of my snowboarding equipment reviews, most of my strong points are based upon affordability. The case is no different. I can’t stress enough how affordable these boots are in comparison to the performance they display. The price I paid for my Motos was $129.59 (looking at receipt) and in my opinion, no other boot really comes close in terms of the price and performance ratio. But this is my personal opinion. Now let’s play the, what if game. This should help you realize if this boot is for you and if not, where to look for one that suits your style.

1. What if I buy a boot that is used?

In some cases, buying a used pair of boots is a good decision. If your purchase is a spur of the moment idea, best go with a used boot. This choice also depends on your riding ability (like most everything else in the world of snowboarding). If you’re just starting out, go with a used boot while you’re in the experimental stages of the sport. For veterans of snowboarding, it would be in your best interest to by a new boot. Preferably the Motos.

2. What if I don’t like Burton’s products?

Many would be surprised at how many times I’ve heard this question. If you really aren’t for Burton and their boarding equipment, there are others out there that can impress. If you want info and don’t have the time to check it out yourself, email me and I’ll look into helping you out.

3. What if the Motos are still to expensive for me?

If your still can’t afford the Burton Motos then fear not. There are plenty of beginner boots and some higher end models for less than the Motos I’m raving about. Your only problem may be that you’ll have to sacrifice a supportive liner for the lower cost. That why I highly recommend the Motos to you.

I hope that answered some of your questions about near alternatives to the Moto. But in all honesty, there is no alternative. Absolutely nothing can come to the values of the Moto. Wanna know why?

Styling: The aggressive styling is what probably dragged me to the Motos first and foremost. From a side view, the Motos boast distinctive lines, separating it from most boots on its level. A velvet-like material lines the toe and heel as well as forming the lace straps that curve up from the base of the boot. My Moto is colored in black and a dark as night blue with orange coating the lace straps and liner’s tongue. The base of the boot no only looks attractive but provides solid traction on slippery surfaces.

Overall support and comfort: This is one area of the boot that truly shines more than any other I’ve worn. This boot is truly one of the most comfortable boots in its class. Trust me, I tried many of them. The Moto provides the perfect amount of support in all the essential places. The heel and lower calf muscles are cuddled in foot were luxury. The rear of the boot is contoured with the back of the leg to cushion and bumps and imperfections in terrain that you run into. The toe of the boot is rounded to shape the contour of the foot and is widened to allow larger feet without irritating your instep and out step. As a result, your toes will never feel like their in a vice grip and you can kiss all those painful blisters goodbye. Much of the Motos Comfort is due to the extra-supportive liner within the shell of the boot. And because this liner is THAT good, I think it deserves its own category.

About the Liner: Now most boots above the beginner level tend to have a liner to provide extra support for fall, jumps and the like. But the Burton Motos as well as the other boots in the Burton line contain a special liner that makes life easier and quicker. Unlike most liners that must be tied like a shoe or not tied at all, the Motos have a liner that requires no tying of knots. You simple pull a set of strings attached to a latch. Pull the string tightly to firmly secure your foot and then slide the latch down to keep the liner in place. This latch will keep your boot as tight a necessary to you’ll never need to re-lace your liner before or after a run. Burton is so good to us.

Insulation against the elements: Those who snowboard know that ice, snow, and water can and will get into some odd places (mouth, ears, nose, down your pants). Thankfully, with the Burton Moto’s on, you know you boots won’t be part of this list. Most of this is due to the secure liner that grips your feet and lower legs. The liner does an excellent job of keeping out wintry debris and more importantly, keeping in the heat. The insulation of these Moto’s is fantastic, I wear them even when not snowboarding. Who says snowboarding boots must only be used for snowboarding. When the ridiculous amounts of snow came pouring in I was grateful to have my motos. 2+ feet of snow? Not a problem.

I very well could rave on and on about the Motos and there supremacy in all that is snowboarding. I could continue on about the personal triumphs of me and my Motos and why you need them. But I thing I’ve said enough to help you make the right decision on the perfect boot for you. Happy trails.
