kamel622's Full Review: Sandra Boynton - But Not the Hippopotamus
Sandra Boynton has quickly become another of my favorite childrens authors. Her books are full of the things that children love, silliness and fun illustrations.
I recently checked out the book But Not the Hippopotamus from the library and Im really glad that I did.
The Story & Illustrations
The rhyming text in this book shows all of the fun things a hog and frog, a moose and a goose, a hare and a bear and a cat and two rats do together. Things like trying on hats, drinking juice and going to the fair.
The story tells us what the animals do and then after each activity includes the line But not the hippopotamus.
A bear and a hare
have been to the fair.
But not the hippopotamus.
On the final four pages the animals invite the hippopotamus to join them. After she thinks about it for a minute she decides that
But YES
the hippopotamus!
But not the armadillo.
Each page has a solid colored background of either peach, blue, green or lavender with a medium sized black font running either across the top or the bottom of the pages.
While each of the animals is drawn to look like what it is, it also has a bit of a personality as they wear a bowtie around the neck or their new running hats. Each of the animals stands upright and have very expressive faces. The hats and bowties are all of the clothing that any of the animals are wearing.
My Feelings
But Not the Hippopotamus is a book that is getting read daily as Sonny (3 year old) asks for it along with his favorite Car Wash every day at lunch time.
I love reading books like this to my very small daycare group. Right now I have just two boys, ages 3 and 4 years, and the 4 year old has a very limited attention span, so finding books that he will sit quietly for is very important to me. Sonny loves hearing books and will sit for several at a time, including this one. He loves saying But not the hippopotamus with me as I read and after only a couple of readings he remembers that the animal on the last page is an armadillo and loves saying that line before I can get to it.
The rhyming text, colorful illustrations and the silly simple story makes this an excellent book for even the youngest child, starting at around a year old and
I do think older children will enjoy hearing this story too, perhaps up to around 7 or 8 years old, but I must confess even the caregiver that is reading to a child can have a lot of fun with this one.
