The Bottom Line: Good product idea, and the basket looked nice while the plants were growing. I just didn't get as many tomatoes as I would have liked to get.
One day last year, on a trip to the store, I spied the Buzzy Hanging Tomato Basket. Seeing as that I like tomatoes quite a bit, I thought that I would give it a try.
The Buzzy Hanging Tomato Basket comes boxed with everything that you need for growing small, cherry sized tomatoes. Inside of the box is a wire hanging basket that includes the chain that it hangs from. Also in the box, are the tomato seeds, dirt, and moss to line the basket with. The box also shows a nice picture of the hanging basket full of red ripened tomatoes.
The wire hanging basket itself is approximately 10 inches around, and 5 inches deep. Setting up your basket is pretty easy to do. First you need to line the wire basket with the moss that is provided. When you're done lining the basket with the moss, it actually looks like a very large bird nest. The next thing you need to do is use the plastic bag that the moss was in to line the inside of the nest that you just created. Doing this, prevents the dirt that you add next from escaping the hanging basket. The next thing you need to do is add the tomato seeds. Simply take the seeds and push them in about an inch below the top of the soil. After that, just add enough water to moisten the soil and hang it up in a place that gets plenty of sunshine.
Putting the Buzzy Hanging Tomato Basket together was easy and took me less than 10 minutes to do from the time and I opened the box. The basket also looked fairly nice hanging off the corner of my house after the plants started to grow.
Approximately a week later, I could see that my tomato plants were starting to grow as they started to poke their heads out of the soil. And about three or four weeks time I had approximately 20 plants that were about 10 inches tall. It was nice to watch the plants as they started to bloom, as I knew they would soon be producing tomatoes.
When growing your tomatoes in the Buzzy Hanging Tomato Basket you want to make sure that the soil is kept fairly moist. I found that I needed to water the plants every other day, or every day if it had been very hot and sunny out. At times this was kind of hard to keep up with. I also noticed that if I accidentally put too much water in the basket, or if it rained a lot that some of the dirt would start to flow out of the basket. To remedy the situation, I simply took a long nail and poked some holes into the plastic liner to allow excess to water to drain out of the basket.
The tomatoes that were produced by my plants were nice and flavorful, but I wish that there had been more of them. My Buzzy Hanging Tomato Basket just didn't seem to look at all like the picture of the box. It seems that out of the 20 or so plants that I started out with, a couple of them died and some of the others seemed to only produce one tomato. Other plants though, did produce multiple tomatoes that were a joy to eat.
Overall I think that the Buzzy Hanging Tomato Basket is a good product idea, but for me it almost wasn't worth the effort for the minimal amount of tomatoes that it produced. I can only give this a three star rating as I feel it was nothing more than an average product.
