After making our way around Olympic National Park, on a rainy, cloudy day, we decided to take a rest in the Port Angeles, Washington area where we found the Best Western Olympic Lodge. Just off of the main road, the Olympic Lodge is easy to spot, but if your like me, you may be surprised to find a full size golf course just outside of the back of the hotel. While, this wouldnt have been a top pick for me and my Mom, this would have been a great place to have surprised my boyfriend with.
Check-In was quick simple. Our room cost about $119 with tax, with a view looking out over the town and the Strait of Juan de Fuca. A view in the opposite direction offers up the sprawling golf course and Hurricane Ridge, but this view will cost an extra $10 or more dollars. Planning on grabbing some grub and going to be the view wasnt that much of an issue for us.
Making our way up to our room for the first time, it became clear that this was four golfers, the carpet features a tan background with scattered golfers teeing off. While it may sound tacky, the carpet was pretty neutral, in tan colors, and really didnt look that bad.
Our room was quite spacious with 2 queens beds. The entry way had a small sink and open closet and then a full bath with an additional sink closed off. I used the shower, which was clean, but I had real issues finding a desired temperature, it was constantly fluctuating. The bathroom was also very cold. It had heat lamp, but it just didnt produce enough heat.
The heat problem wasnt just in the bathroom, however. The thermostat continually let the room fall below the set temperature and didnt feel true to its setting at all. We had the thermostat set in the mid- to upper 80s before we ever felt comfortably warm.
Again, I think this had something to do with the size of the room versus the heating unit, which was pretty small and obviously older. Regardless of the heating problems, the room was nice enough. The beds were decked out with wonderfully clean and fresh bedding and nice, soft, fluffy pillows.
Across from the bed was a large armoire that fully contained a TV, small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker. These items were concealed and shut behind doors, my son didnt even realize the refrigerator until it was time to leave the next morning.
The back of the room had a large window, but it opened all of the way *and* had no lock on it, except for a catch on the handle that didnt work. This may not be an issue for most people, but it was for me, especially since I had my very curious two year old with me.
This back area of the room also featured a desk with a computer chair and a table with 2 chairs.
Overall the room was very clean and well taken care of, expect for the lack of heat.
The amenities are shockingly slim at the Best Western Olympic Lodge. Outside, just before the golf course, is a small pool and whirlpool. This area is protected by netting, but a caution sign stays on the door, enter at your own risk. I suppose they have attempted to stop the golf balls from flying in the area, but Im not sure I would want to take the chance.
The Olympic Lodge does offer up a full breakfast bar for a price, but we elected to skip on that and just grab a sandwich as we headed out of town. There only other amenity is a small fitness room that isnt hardly worth mentioning.
This hotel is also 100% Smoke Free and does not allow pets.
Overall the Olympic Lodge in Port Angeles seems to be a wanna-be resort with the beautiful golf course in the back. With their stunning lobby, most folks, especially those that would pay their premium rate (about $200 a night) could easily be disappointed. As for me, I was stunned by their lack of amenities, but I did find the room clean, too bad I was cold half of the time. If the hotel could get that problem fixed I would probably recommend them, but until that time Id have to say avoid this cold hotel.
