The Bottom Line: The Labrador Security Company warning sign honors your favorite breed of big dogs, while warning would-be intruders of 80 pounds of teeth and claws somewhere within.

Although a sign with the legend Caution: Area Patrolled by Labrador Retriever Security Company has been prominently displayed on the fence of our last three houses, the idea of Labs as watchdogs has always struck me as slightly funny. Labs, after all, are renowned for friendliness - any wannabe burglar who knows his (or her - let's not be sexist) dogs will be less deterred than if the sign were to say "Doberman Pinscher Security Company." Lab owners often joke that an intruder is more likely to be knocked down and licked half to death (or beaten with that powerful tail) than bitten or chased out of the yard. Nonetheless, we've proudly advertised the breed for a decade, and had no break-ins (knock wood).
I ought to say that I used to think Labs make better spectator dogs than watchdogs, but just let Mommy sound like she's scared and our Blonde is all business. Yep, that ten-year-old, cancer-ridden, half-toothless female will come tearing through the door, hair on her back erect, barking as ferociously as any 90-pound canine could bark. Perhaps the sign isn't so amusing after all!
Our warning sign is now about a decade old: it survived six Texas summers and four Illinois winters before being forcibly retired when a vicious gust of wind ripped it from its third mounting, breaking off a corner in the process. An 8-3/4" x 11-1/2" rectangle with rounded corners, the sign is slightly larger than a sheet of letter paper. The 0.040-gauge polystyrene is no slouch - about twice as thick as your average ID card. The printing is all red on a white background, except for the two-inch tall CAUTION across the top, which is white on red. A dog silhouette - easily identifiable from posture, ears, and tail as a Lab - occupies the center of the image, with that "patrol" warning across the bottom. The sign has holes for screw- or nail-mounting in the top outside corners. Our older sign had a black silhouette (whoever heard of a red lab?) but is otherwise the same. The sign's white background has turned grayish over the years, but the lettering and silhouette are just as sharp as when it was new.
This is a great gift for any Lab lover (similar signs are available for many other breeds, if your tastes run elsewhere), and the Labrador Security Patrol warning sign will also serve as a crime deterrent. Security experts say that burglars tend to avoid dogs, and will pass by a house with a dog in favor of the one next door.
