| penguinman's Full Review: CCM Super Tacks 652 |
I purchased a set of 2003 652's as my first non-used skate, since I could never come up with a good reason to spend the extra cash to buy new. However, with $200 burning a hole in my pocket and the local skate shop, Zwickers, right down the street, I decided the time had come for me to get a new pair of skates and break them in during the summer before leagues began in earnest in the fall.
The first thing I noticed about the 652's is that they broke in rather quickly; I did the old "put socks in boiling water, wring em out, and wear the skates around the house" trick twice, and within about 2 hours of skating, they fit my feet quite well. My only complaints were that there was a small pinch point towards the top of my foot. I could have easily had this punched out, but since it happened sporadically, I decided to gut it out and hope it would break in as I skated. As it turned out, it never did.
On the ice, they worked pretty well. I didn't find them all that heavy, although having gone to a lighter skate I find myself skating a bit faster and my shifts lasting a few seconds longer. The boot, holder, and blade held up pretty well to the usual weekly abuse thrown at them with gusto; the only exception was the woven toe, which after an odd collision that resulted in my laces being cut from toe to tongue, was severely cut. A can of protectoe is a worthwhile investment.
As for the blades, they had the pitch that I liked (ideally, I like my skates a touch more forward, but short of buying grafs, you can't get that out of the box), although the radius was a bit bigger than the TUUKs i was used to. Nothing earth shattering there. A complaint did lie on the prolite 3 holder. I'm not a huge guy (6'1, 175 without equipment), but the skate seemed to have quite a bit more give than what i was used to. Switching to a more "solid" holder on another pair of skates brought that sensation to the forefront.
all in all, I loved my 652s, and I would still be skating on them today if it wasn't for fate handing me a set of top of the line CCM Externo 60's for $25. Recommended.
