| penguinman's Full Review: CCM Supra Gloves M-HG420 |
I value my hands. Not in the usual "I'm glad I have hands" sense, but in the "if one ever got injured, I'm killing myself, so I'm making damn well sure they're safe" sense. With this in mind, the HG420, an older but still good glove, fit my bill. I obtained them at Zwickers, the local skate shop, for a little over $60.
In terms of protection, these gloves are tops. The only pain I've felt was in trying to catch a slapshot, palm forward (not a smart move and not the glove's fault), and a weird incident where i managed to bend my index finger backwards. Due to the design of a two piece finger, the second injury is a necesary evil; I can't play with a one piece finger.
When I first got these gloves, they seemed a bit stiff, but I figured it would go away as they broke in, like most gloves do. At the beginning of me using them, it was actually difficult for me to get my hand off the stick! Unfortunately, my hope for a break in was not quite correct. After a year and a half of play, when these gloves are bone dry, they are still pretty stiff. That said, as soon as they get a bit moist (and they do, as I sweat a ton and the palms are skin, not Clarino), they are as mobile as can be. The actual glove is extremely comfortable, no pinch points or rough spots like in some other cheap gloves my friends have (one of them being CCM's 452 glove). The palm allows a pretty good grip on the stick and has a decent feel.
Unfortunately, all that padding makes the glove pretty heavy. I was never known for my stickhandling, but these gloves are certainly not helping things. Also, the palm started to get holey a litle earlier than the gloves I had used before went, which makes me wonder about their durability. Then again, at the price point, it's hard to argue against these.
Overall, if you need a protective glove at a decent price, give these a try.
