| girlfriday1's Full Review: Chi Turbo Ceramic Hairstyling Iron |
Fellow epinionator, mashimaru, wrote a very thorough and spot-on review of this pricey, but oh so worth it straight iron. If I were to be as thorough, would be redundant. So, let me just be the girl in the back that nods and agrees that this hair appliance, or another of the same quality (read...price range) is a necessary evil if you want to achieve that shiny, moveable, straight as a pin "do" you see in glossy magazines.
You say, it's their $200.00 plus haircuts that make them look like that or that they're just blessed with a better mane by the "Hair Gods"?
Not so girlfriend. I have straightened many a friend and acquaintance (one stranger even in the bathroom of our kids' gymnastics studio)and turned their not so wonderful hair into shinier more modern and face flattering styles. All because I have a super hot 1" ceramic styling weapon.
PLEASE do not assume that all straightening irons are created equal. I too, owned a Wigo and some even cheaper brand back in the stone ages. You get what you pay for. The quality difference is not only in the plates but the nice heft in the hand, smooth edges that won't snag your hair when you slide you it through, and the ungodliest high temp. that you swear will melt your face. That high temp is what will get your head a swingin'!
You don't know how cheap the Conairs are or the like until you use both. Just take our word for it and don't skimp on something that can change your outlook on life. I know that sounds so trite but a good hair day really can make a day go better now can't it girls???
I have been using the CHI TURBO for a year and a half and it hasn't lost any heat or suffered any damage yet. I use it once a day, after washing and blowing my hair with a huge round brush. I always look like a republican senator's wife just before I fire up the iron. You know, some awful helmet bob...
I always use the highest heat setting (I have thick wavy brown hair), but you have the ability to lower the temp. on the Turbo if you wish. I use it when there is still a faint dampness left. That seems to get it way shinier and straighter. When you begin, clip the majority of your hair up and slowly take down portions out of the clip to straighten. Once I get it all through the iron, I use Frederic Fekkai hair spray at the roots to give it some height. That helps so that you don't just look like a drowned rat. Take a portion, spray at the root and do so emphasizing the back of the crown. The straightening part I've gotten down to 7 mins. flat. No pun intended...
Remember the woman at the gymnastics studio I mentioned? Her hair was down her back, cut straight (no layers) and Rosanna Danna frizzy. I talked her into letting me straighten it when she remarked how nice my hair always looks. (I had it in my bag from working out prior). She looked 10 years younger and hipper when we came out of the bathroom. She got such nice compliments that night that she rushed out and bought one at our local Ulta and she's been using it ever since! No kidding. Pinky swear! I admit that was quite forward of me, but sometimes I can't help myself.
All good things eventually bonk out and your straightening iron WILL at some point lose it's heat. The cheaper ones do it oh so faster! I expect to make it to the end of this year and then I'll go right out and buy another. Maybe not the CHI if something better comes around, but NEVER a cheapy one again.
Good luck and happy straightening!
P.S. Mine is the 1" and I recommend that size to short do's as well as long do's. Way easier to handle than the big ones. Remember to run it through just like a hair brush and never stay in one spot too long. It's not a crimper! Remember those??? LOL.
