Pretty Bad, But Sadly Not The Worst
Written: Feb 08 '06 (Updated Jun 21 '06)
Pros:appearance, good fit
Cons:poor sound quality, expensive for what you get, awful free earbuds
The Bottom Line: These headphones look good, but the sound quality is awful.
After shopping around Ross I found these for $6. I only had one pair of headphones that were portable and I needed an extra pair. So far these Coby headphones aren't worth the cost.
Style/Looks/Design/Comfort
These headphones come in silver and blue. I stuck with the blue since it was the only version avaliable. The style is the behind-the-neck headphones. They feel very comfortable but if oyu haven't felt the style before it might take some time getting used to them. The style is appealing and looks good with most of today's electronics. If you've tried behind-the-neck beofre then you should have no problems since these are very comfortable to wear.
Sound Quality
Overall I found the sound to be good on the treble and clarity end but horrendous on the bass end. Now, I know your thinking (What kind of bass are you expecting here?). Well, I'll say my old h.ear headphones (MDRJ10) would by far outweigh these. Even the Koss P4 five dollar headphones sounded better.
Music Tests
Country - It sounds pretty bad, there seem to be some inferior mid level because the headphones went skyrocketing in volume whenever guitars came on. The vocals were pretty drained. Even some soft Keith Urban couldn't surffice.
Dance/Techno - Overall it sounded very good except the entire bass production was lowered. IT was there but it was very off and the headphones couldn't handle the techno beats in Beeny Benasii or even DJ Sammy.
Hip-Hop - Both Eminem and Jay-Z sounded awful. The vocals were okay but at least 30% of the production was lost. Not for rap, at all.
Latin - It sounded okay but pop-latin like Shakira sounded horrid, pretty much all the bass was lost and it could barely be heard.
Rock - System of a Down sounded ok but like I said in country, the guitars were completely overpowered. I put on some Trapt and it sounded okay but the bass guitar was a little faint and some of the insturments were either faint or overpowered. Rock may do but the songs will sound occasionally different.
Pop - I put on vocal Christina Aguilera and it sounded very good, likely because it didn't require bass and the high-end of these headphones are good. But I put on the more pop-rock stuff and it was completely drained and washed-out.
Pop/Punk - All American Rejects sounded OK but a lot of it was washed out or drained, similar to the faintness in the hard rock.
Reggae - Shaggy sounded pretty good as mosto f his stuff didn't require a whole lot of bass but after I threw in Sean Paul these headphones were dieing to be plugged out. They couldn't handle a thing on his Dance-Reggae album The Trinity.
R&B - Most of the vocals sounded ok but the bass, of course, was very faint.
Adult Rock - Pretty dissappointing results, it couldn't EVEN HANDLE U2 OR HOWIE DAY, which are both pretty slow and laid-back bands.

To be honest I haven't delt with Coby customer service so I can't comment on their service.
Price
The retail price is $10. I'm lucky I got these for half price. If I would've paid $10 I would've been devistated. The price for these are way too high, I think $5 is about the value for these.
Oh...We Do Get Something Free For Our Trouble???
Yes, but it is nothing exciting...sorry. You get a free set of earbuds with the headphones. There is no mention of their frequency range, sensitivity, or anything on the box, nor on the Coby website (www.cobyusa.com). All I can say is that the P4 from Koss sound a whole lot better than these. They are seriously around the sound quality of the behind-the-neck headphones, but also lacking in high end.
Bottom Line
Pretty dissappointing. It couldn't handle really any music except vocal and a little bit of pop-punk. Maybe some people don't care about sound quality, and may want to buy these for appearances. But otherwise, these headphones are awful for any other purposes.
