CommTech Watto - No No Mr. Roboto - It's Mista Watto

Written: Dec 10 '00 (Updated Jul 31 '03)
Pros:Colorful, removeable wings.
Cons:Falls over all the time.
The Bottom Line: A must have if trying to complete the series ...

My latest find in the Comm Tech realm of toys is Watto. I found him at my local Sav-On store for a whopping .99 cents! I highly recommend that you check your local Sav-On stores for lots of toys (mostly Star Wars and Pokeman) that are on clearance. Not only do they make great stocking stuffers (as well as for Toys for Tots) but it’s a great way to build a collection – or complete it – at rock bottom prices.

Watto is one of the more colorful figures from the Star Wars Episode 1 collection. His colors range from a washed out green to a medium gray – and he also has that bulging belly and horrific snout. While Watto might be the most colorful he is also the most likely to not survive in my toy collection. As soon as I opened the package and tried to stand him up I noticed that his feet aren’t flat and because of his large mid section he falls over – not even my tried and true poster putty on the feet trick could help him stay upright. Sorry Watto, but you are doomed to forever be a “leaner” piece in my collection.

Watto comes with a datapad that is fully detailed on both front and back as well as moveable and removable wings. The wings come packaged away from his body and easily snap into place. I used part of the inner plastic packaging to keep Watto from falling over – simply cut the bottom part of the inner plastic piece and use it under his wings – you can barely see it and it’s nicer looking than having the figure leaning to the left or right. Watto also features an open grip – you can easily snap any of the other figures accessories into his hands (Anakin’s grease gun or Amidala’s guns). This figure had limited movement – his arms are the only pieces that move to any degree that it noticeable. His neck can move but only a little – and after a few minutes it does return to the original position. His legs have no joints but are made from a soft plastic and can be made to move if bent or twisted.

Watto speaks – that is if you have the Comm Tech reader. Like all the other Comm Tech chips in this series Watto’s chip has the holographic background as well as his face. On this chip the image is blurred – so far I haven’t been able to establish if this is a defect or if all the chip pictures are like this. Watto says three complete phrases; “No money, no parts, no deal”, “Don’t getta me wrong-o, I hava great faith in the boy” and “Sebulba there is going to win I think”. Par for the course, these phrases aren’t the clearest or easiest to understand.

Watto is featured in the Collection 2 series of the Comm Tech line from Hasbro. Other figures in this series include Ric Olie, Darth Sidious, C-3PO and Senator Palpatine. Watto also came with the standard 10 Jedi Master Points (on the UPC) but since it was a clearance item and there was a black slash through it I’m not sure if Hasbro will honor it for redemption toward other toys.

Because of Watto’s large belly and subsequent falling over he’s gone directly into my Star Wars Lucite wall case. I know better than to give this to the boys for Christmas since the figure was just poorly designed and constructed. If you are planning on buying this for a kid I suggest you reconsider – it will be about 30 seconds of play then tossed in the corner. Watto may be colorful and look almost exactly like the movie character but he’s just not functional. If you need him to complete a collection then don’t hesitate to snag him up but don’t expect much from him or his chip.

As always, thanks for the visit!
