I am attempting to atone for displacing some birds from their home in one of vents in my house. I won't tell you the woeful tale of torment in great detail, but I swore that I would find a way to make up for my decision to keep the birds from getting deeper and deeper into my home.
One of the things I have done to make life nice for my local wild birds (and I have done many) is to put up feeders. I knew almost nothing about suet, but I did know that some birds really need suet in order to consume the calories they need to stay healthy year round, so off I went and bought a suet feeder and several suet cakes. Well, the birds definitely like suet, but so do squirrels (aka tree-rats), and tree-rats chased birds off feeders and gobble up all the food even when I left food on the ground for them. What's a girl with a guilty conscience to do?
I tried many things, but nothing really worked at keeping the birds fed and the tree-rats from disturbing them, until I bought the C&S Hot Pepper Delight Suetdough. Small mammals, including tree-rats, are able to taste and dislike hot pepper. However, birds are not disturbed by it. In fact, the birds seem to love the hot pepper suet. Grackles, woodpeckers, catbirds, cardinals, sparrows, titmice and many other birds have been visiting my suet feeder, but the squirrels stay away.
I live in the north eastern part of the USA. I have made it a point to find out what kind of stuff my local birds eat. This product has no ingredients that my birds won't eat. This is important because who wants to waste money on products with red millet, if your birds won't eat red millet?
Here are the ingredients: "Rendered Beef Suet, Red Chili Peppers, Roasted Peanuts, Corn & Oats"
I wish it contained black oil sunflower seeds, that is the favorite food in my neck of the woods, but like I said, this food is very popular.
The company that makes this product, C&S, claims that they make their product into a "dough" that will not melt in hot weather. I have only been using this product a few weeks, so I don't know how it will hold up when we get into 90 degree, summer weather, but it is a different texture from other other suets that aren't "dough," so I am optimistic.
By the way, make sure you shop around when you buy this suet, I've seen it sell for $3 in some stores and I just paid $1.25 for it at Home Depot.
All in all, I am very satisfied with this product and suggest giving it a try if your birds are getting less suet than your tree-rats.
