Pros: perfect size for toddler, cute!!
Cons: Limited Edition/availability
My 19 month old daughter is quite the little mommy and actually has several Cabbage Patch dolls, but this one was the very first. One of my friends picked up a whole slew of these Cabbage Patch Kids Holiday Limited Edition Newborn Dolls at a Black Friday sale at Wal-mart for $10. She bought as many as she could and then sold them to those of us moms who were too exhausted to get up at 5AM to go shopping. I decided to get one of the dolls from her to give to my daughter for her first Christmas. She was only 10 months old but starting to toddle around and this looked like a sweet doll for her, just the right size - and I hoped she would like it.
The Cabbage Patch Kids Newborn Doll is small in size, around a foot long and is made to look like a newborn baby. Not to be confused with the Cabbage Kids Babies which are significantly larger - and made to ressemble toddlers (we have a few of these too!). Our Newborn doll is a little girl and she is mostly bald with just a sprig of blonde hair in a sprout on top of her head, she has blue/purple eyes. The dolls come in boy or girl, different ethnicities, eye and hair colors, or with our without hair. My girlfriend selected our specific babydoll for my daughter because she was bald and blue eyed also! The doll comes wearing a clothlike diaper and an outfit that can be changed. Ours is in a light green and purple sleeper with a hat. The hat is fastened to her head by those plastic ties they use to hold tags on at the store. Our doll also came with a hard plastic baby bottle (also green) and a pink envelope of paperwork.
The dolls head is plastic and the rest of the doll is a soft cloth. You can surface wash it and we've not had any troubles with it and it still smells somewhat of the baby powder scent that it started out with. The clothes can be removed and washed in the washing machine and dryer. The diaper on this doll is a cloth diaper and these newborn dolls are too small to fit into the replacement diapers that are sold for the cabbage patch babies, so you'll want to make sure to not lose the diaper it comes with. Under the diaper is a cute little dimpled butt that is stamped/signed by Xavier Roberts.
In the paperwork envelope there is a birth certificate and an adoption certificate. Your doll comes pre-named and has a birthday (Month and Year) selected. You can then go online and register your doll at www.mycpk.com. Here you can change its name, change its birthdate and pick an adoption date. Once you create your free account at www.mycpk.com you can then log in and add as many cabbage patch dolls and pets to your account as you collect them. You'll get an email birthday card from PlayAlong Toys when your doll has a birthday. We renamed our cabbage patch newborn doll because she came with an odd name "Damaris Emmalee" that I didn't care for. So we renamed her an equally odd name, but at least one that I could see a toddler pronouncing in the not so distant future. I do have to remark that some of the names that these dolls come with are certainly quite "interesting", to put it nicely (We have one that came with the name Priscilla Violet, very drag queen ... ya think?)
Our Cabbage patch kids newborn doll has absolutely been the perfect baby doll for my little girl. Its small in size but big enough for her to really get her arms around it. She'll carry it around and hug on it, and even give her kisses. She likes to push her in a baby stroller and take her with her in the car. Oh, my baby girl is shaping up to be quite a good 'little mommy'.
Since receiving this doll about 9 months ago I'd looked on the shelves for a similar sized cabbage patch doll to give as a gift and had only found the larger Cabbage Patch Kids Babies dolls. This specific model was sold just the doll, paperwork and an accessory around the holidays of 2005 and was a very limited edition. I couldn't find them on the shelves even right after the holiday season when everything went on sale. So, I'm pleased to share however that recently I've seen they are selling the newborn doll again but this time it comes with a cute little baby carrier and of course its twice as expensive at $24.99 each - yes my daughter got one of these also. At just the $10 we paid for our Holiday Edition newborn doll at the Black Friday sale - it was a great price for our baby's first baby!
