Too big, too dark, too pretentious

Written: Jan 27 '00
Pros:Unique shopping mall, luxurious rooms
Cons:Sterile inside and out, too big, too impersonal

Caesar's does look royal. Sitting way back from the Strip at the end of a long, long drive lined with statuary, the resort has a haughty, imperial look.

All blue, its facade is covered in a strange metal grid, adding to the impression of aloofness.

A moving sidewalk takes visitors from the street into the casino. The casino area is large, and a bit dark. The sports gaming area is overwhelming -- just too many giant screens.

The food-court style dining service on the casino floor offers a number of good choices.

One plus is instruction on a number of casino games by intelligent, friendly former dealers. We sat in on a Pai Gow poker class (free, like all the instruction) and had fun learning the game.

My overall impression of Caesar's is of an icy place -- too large, too blue, too impersonal.

The adjacent mall, however, is worth a visit. Full of very high-end retailers, it is fun to browse. I am not an enthusiastic shopper and would not go out of my way to see it again, but the mall, which features frequent sound and light shows played out on its walls and ceilings, is fun to see. Die-hard shoppers will absolutely love it.

Beyond shopping, Caesar's mall offers a world-class selection of restaurants.

Rooms at this recently-renovated resort are large, attractive and generally the most expensive in Las Vegas. The new pool area is okay, but somewhat sterile.

This is not the place to bring children. Nothing in the atmosphere is welcoming to families. The Mirage and Treasure Island, two kid-friendly resorts, are right next door, however.

Serious gamblers might well like Caesar's. Once in the vast casino, it would be easy to just stay there and gamble. Visitors who would rather hop around, doing more sightseeing than gambling, would be better off staying elsewhere.
