As soon as we walked into Café Europa (on the corner of 57th St. and 7th Ave.), we knew we were in for a treat. There, just past the front desk, was a gorgeous display of many different types of salads. To the left of that was a display case full of the most tantalizing desserts you could imagine!
The reserved, but friendly manager guided us to a table by the window so we could watch the world going by as we ate...entertainment, if you will. Our waitress was friendly as well, and had suggestions for good choices for lunch.
Looking around, we noticed the unusual ceiling. I’ve seen wallpaper similar to it. The background was sky blue, and there were light, fluffy clouds and stars painted on it. It was pretty, but you had to look up in order to see it...something we hadn’t done until halfway through our meal.
True to Italian tradition, a bottle of Pelligrino water was on each table. The menu quoted a price for Pelligrino water, so if that bottle were to be opened, there would be a charge for it...just like in Italy. They did, however, serve tap water, unlike most Italian restaurants I’ve been to in the home country.
Our meals proved to be all that we had hoped for. My grilled portobello mushroom salad with sundried tomatoes and goat cheese was excellent, and my daughter’s chicken Siciliano sandwich was served with her choice of salad from the attractive display at the front of the restaurant. Expecting a small dab of salad, her eyes practically popped out when she saw the huge portion of tomatoes and fresh mozzarella lying next to the very large sandwich on her plate.
Never to be one to turn down a delicious dessert, I just had to have something, so I choose their “Torta di Frutti Fresca”. It was a thin layer of something like a coffee cake just smothered with a variety of berries, including currents, and wild blueberries which you don’t often see these days. On the sides of that huge piece stood dollops of whipping cream. It was yummy to the nth degree!
And now for the nitty gritty….. the restrooms were downstairs. There were two of them and they were unisex. An employee was scouring and sterilizing the wall tiles lining the stairwell, and let me tell you, they sparkled!
I handed my waitress one of my “Epinions.com” cards, and she said she would be sure to read all about my opinion, so I hope she sees this. The experience was well worth the stop! An additional note here is that if you are too busy to stay and eat, you can take out any of the tempting salads and desserts from the display cases in the front of Café Europa.
