| SLOW's Full Review: Cafe Milano San Antonio |
The great thing about San Antonio is not the tourist haven of the Riverwalk, or that monument to illegal immigration known as the Alamo; no, the great thing about San Antonio is that there are about a billion little locally-owned, storefront restaurants...and about all of 'em are great.
Take, for instance, the Cafe Milano, on Bandera, round Leon Valley. I actually went there for the first time after I'd walked out of another restaurant, a large statewide chain restaurant, because the line was too long for my liking. I wanted a place where I could sit down and get service, something above fast food, but not quite expensive fine dining. When I pulled up to Cafe Milano, I wasn't sure if I'd found it-- the corner anchor of a nondescript strip mall, it didn't look that impressive.
Walking in, I knew I'd found the right place. The older gentleman who greeted me seemed genuinely pleased to see me, and took me to my table right away. There were only a couple of other tables occupied, in a space that seems fairly large and airy. It was very roomy, and quite comfortable. Almost immediately my server appeared. Although young, he seemed confident and ready to help make my meal excellent. And he did-- when I asked him for input, he steered me away from what he thought was a questionable choice, and to a selection he preferred. I like to get advice from waitstaff, when solicited, and I am always amazed when I run into someone who hasn't tried everything on the menu of the place they work at-- I blame the chef, and the owner, in those cases. Anyway, I got an appetizer that turned out to be enough for three meals by itself, and a dinner worth at least two. It was wonderful. I chased it with the house white, and was very satisfied. The ambience, the food, the service-- all top-notch. Okay...just in case the question was bugging you: the eggplant parmesan-- it was wonderful, just the way I like it. I recommend it highly. The whole meal came in under $30, with alcohol, and fed me three times. That's ten bucks a meal, in my book. When I went back with my girl, we ordered the same thing (the one appetizer, and one entree), splitting it, and we still had enough to take home. That's value. And when it's good eating, that's outstanding.
