| v_marie23's Full Review: Cafe des Artistes |
The Cafe des Artistes is virtual perfection. It boasts a winning combination of incredibly beautiful murals, quick and attentive service, and mouth-watering cuisine. The dark wood, subtle candlelight, and frolicking nymphs create the ultimate romantic atmosphere, but make sure you request to sit in the mezzanine to ensure a total view of these fantastic paintings.
Upon my first visit, I was thoroughly satisfied with my appetizer of wild mushrooms with butter and herbs. The delicate fungi were not at all overcooked, leaving a pleasant texture that is often ruined by overcooking. My dining companion was shocked by the large amount of salad of wild greens he received, and remarked about the wonderful flavor of the lemon-olive oil dressing. Both appetizers were in the $10-$14 range.
The appetizers could not compare to the entrees we later received. The delicious herb encrusted tuna steak, ($28), was cooked perfectly, and the portion size was also more than ample.
I must say that if anything, save room for dessert. There are so many choices that it makes a decision very difficult. After staring at the wonderful presentation of cakes, mousses, and ice creams, we finally decided on the Hot Fudge Napoleon- a definite hit. This frozen treat was a chocolate lover's dream.
For the more budget conscious diner, there is a $20 prix fixe lunch, or $38 for dinner. The lunch was equally amazing, with a choice of Mixed greens salad, country pate, soup, or melon for an appetizer and the choice of Bass with a lemon-caper sauce or Chicken Paprikish for entree. Unfortunately, the choices for dessert for the prix fixe are somewhat limited, but the chocolate mousse is always a pleasure.
The only pitfalls that this restaurant has is the difficulty in getting reservations. The safe bet is to go on a week night, or make reservations a few weeks in advance.
