| nick1326's Full Review: California Cage Deluxe Macaw Playtop Bird Cage wit... |
I've always been fond of California Cages since they began producing high quality top-of-class iron cages to compete with King's cages in the large-parrot market. The California Deluxe Macaw Playtop is a large wrought iron cage with fantastic welds and construction, designed to house any large macaws, with the exception of Hyacinthes (whos remarkably strong beaks require stainless steel!). The Macaw Deluxe will easily accomodate a Scarlet, Blue and Gold, Military and of course, a sweet Greenwing (the largest of the large macaws - in some cases Bigger than a Hyacinthe!).
Cailfornia put it's large-parrot macaw cages on the market to try and gain market share from King's... Kings makes some incredible cages, and the construction and build quality are virtually second to none (with the exception of hand-made customs, whic typically run 3 to 5 time the price!!!) Basically King's is King - however King's politics has left something to be desired, and the prices are clearly the highest in this class of cages, so enter California Cages, a very well made substitute for a Kings, and a better price and without the shadiness....
The Deluxe boasts a large 30" x 40" (depth/width) with a hospitable 48" inner-measured height. This is ample room for even your big birdies *(greenwings!) and in fact I keep my Greenwing in this exact cage - while it is not PALACIAL, it is certainly plenty large for him to climb around on and have a ball - the playpen top makes for perfect playtime, and during the afterwork hours when I'm home my guy gets free run of the cage, the door is left open, and he loves to perch on the playpen and watch TV with us and of course, eat dinner with the fam! I'm not crazy about play-pen tops, because they have a semi-dangerous history - however the California PLaypen is safely constructed with no sharp welds, and ample height to avoid your bird getting stuck under the ladders. The door closure is very intuitively designed, is highly parrot-proof (Macaw proof I should say) and the cage is mounted on easy-rolling casters, which is a key feature, because this cage is well over 160 pounds fully assembled (add weight for birdy-toys later and you can easily top 200) so the casters are essential for avoiding back problems! The door swings open with plenty of space for Polly to get in and out wth trouble - additionally the feeder doors are adequately sized and parrot-proofed to make for safe, easy and convenient access to feeder doors.
Price wise, the California Macaw Deluxe sells for around 575 or so (street price) which is well under the comparable Kings model, which lists for well over 1100, and sells with a street-price of around 850-900... California has successfully priced their cages well below Kings are still manages to offer comparable quality - this is a major selling point of these cages. Powerder Coating is durable and 100% non-toxic on all California Cages, and of course they come in a wide variety of finshes from white, to black to black/gold, green and so on - all colors carry the same price. The cages come in 3 boxes and assemble quickly and easily with their own inclusive hardware and instructions - hardware quality is excellent and the cage will build in less than an hour easily.
The only issue to worry about is if you have a Hyacinthe, the wrought iron just won't do it- you'll need a stainless steel cage, and these typically cost 1500 or more! However anyone who owns a Hyacinthe is probably already aware of this! Weld wise, however, the California is as strong as the competition, so you needn't worry about broken welds as a result of any other large macaw! All in all this is an excellent cage for under 750 dollars (well under) and In my opinion is an excellent competitor to Kings, offering comparable quality and look with a much better price. Check out ALL of these cages before making an online puirchase though - shipping can be costly, and you don't want to have to return-ship a cage of this size (3 heavy rectangular boxes). I highly recomend the Macaw Deluxe for any large macaw or for extra space for your amazon.
