| slbenz's Full Review: California Dusters |
Background:
If you ask my wife, she will tell you I am a bit picky about having a clean car to drive around. Years ago, I saw the California Duster in my local auto store and thought to decide to try it since it is advertised to reduce the need of car washings to your car. Who doesn't want to reduce the amount of hand washings to their car? I will be sharing my experience using the California Duster these past ten years and several cars that I have owned over the years.
Features:
Comes with it's own bag to store it. The brush head can be removed for hand washing. The handle is long enough for a good reach and ergonomic.
Actual Use:
As described, the California Duster is very easy to use. You only need to gently wipe the duster on your car and it does remove the dust that accumulates onto your car. The duster has a paraffin wax impregnated into the duster to help lift dust off the car. Now I have owned several dark colored cars while using the duster and it easily picks up the dust off the car paint. When the duster was new, the paraffin wax seemed to leave a light film on my dark colored cars but was invisible on my light colored cars. Over time, with more use of the duster, the paraffin wax didn't deposit itself onto my dark colored cars. It just lifted the dust off. Even on the front, rear and side windows, the California Duster removed dust off them without a problem. It seems as they advertise, the more you use it and it gets dirty, the better the performance. The manufacturer says all you need to do to clean the brush is to shake it and it is ready to go again.
Over the years, I eventually had to wash the duster once it got to a point where it wasn't lifting the dust anymore. Don't make the big mistake like I did and put the duster into the washer. Not only did it remove the paraffin wax on the duster, but made the duster head's red color bleed with the rest of the clothes. Can you say pink? Yes, some of my clothes turned pink. Didn't realize you need to hand wash this duster in mild detergent and let air dry.
Even after the washing and accidental removal of the paraffin wax on the duster, it still works but just not as efficiently. You need to shake out the dust after every use to maintain efficiency. With the paraffin wax, you only needed to shake it out when necessary. Also the handle on the duster is long enough for shorter people to reach over the top of a minivan. My wife is 5'2" and can easily reach the top of our former Ford Windstar and current Mazda 5 microvan. The California Duster does as advertised, reduce the amount of car washings to keep your car looking clean and is especially effective on my dark colored cars that always seems to need to be cleaned.
Warranty:
None implied by manufacturer but some online stores will offer a 30-day return policy.
Conclusions:
Overall, I have been satisfied with the use and operation of the California Duster. It does work as advertised and reduces the need for you to wash your car to keep it looking clean. Just make sure that when it is time to really wash it, only hand wash it or suffer the pink syndrome in the wash like I did!
