duffysmom's Full Review: California Natural Dog Food
Shortly after we adopted Duffy, my rough, tough scruffy terrier mix (think Benji on a bad hair day) from our local shelter, he contracted parvovirus - an often fatal virus that attacks the digestive tract of puppies and sometimes older dogs. He survived, but he was weak, painfully thin and undernourished.
The illness left him with a very sensitive tummy. I tried several kibbles in an attempt to find a food that would leave him with firm poops - a sign that he was using the nutrients in the food. But even though I was very careful to introduce a new food slowly over a period of time, his system always responded the same: diarrhea, soft stools or mush.
I finally settled on another premium food supplemented with canned pumpkin and boiled rice. This concoction usually produced a reasonably firm stool, buy he still looked thin and was rather mellow for a growing puppy. (As an aside, a couple of tablespoons of canned pumpkin - not pie filling - added to your pups meals is great for calming down those occasional digestive upsets. The fiber is great for diarrhea and constipation.)
Alas, at about 9 months of age, Duffy began throwing up his kibble shortly after mealtime and subsequently refused to eat it. A trip to the vet confirmed there was nothing
medically wrong and that he was able to digest food properly. So I began searching for another food.
This was when my husband suggested we try the California Natural again. We had tried the puppy formula when he was younger, but his stools tended to look like cowpies
(sorry, it that was a little too descriptive). But, figuring we had nothing to lose, we went out and bought the adult lamb and rice formula. Once we had switched him over to the California Natural it happened....
I Believe in Miracles
He pooped out a Tootsie Roll!!! Thats right, a small, dark and firm little tootsie roll. And its been that way ever since.
Duffs been eating this food for about 8 months now and during that time he has filled out, developed muscles and grown a beautiful thick coat. He has enough energy to
excel at agility (the dogwalk is his favorite obstacle). But most importantly, I have been freed from poop patrol. No longer do I feel the need to check his poops or ask my husband after their evening walks, Did he poop? What did it look like?, thanks to the superior nutrition he gets from his California Natural.
California Natural by Natura Pet Products uses only natural ingredients fit for human consumption and is formulated for "sensitive" dogs with an intolerance to specific pet food ingredients.
The ingredients are lamb meal, brown & white rice and sunflower oil. Thats it. Its made to be highly digestible and Duffys poops are proof of that. (There she goes with the poops, again!) It is recommended by Whole Dog Journal as one of the top dry dog foods.
Duff gobbles this down without ever coming up for air - although he has never turned his nose up at food unless he was sick, or thought it would make him sick. So I did my own taste test (hold the eeewws please): it tasted like food - kind of like a lamb cracker.
Finally, cost: when I was feeding the previous kibble, I fed Duff 2½ to 2¾ cups a day. I only feed 1½ to 1¾ cups of the California Natural and a 17.5lb bag costs about the same as the other at the feed store where I buy it. So its definitely cheaper to feed this. If you contact Natura on their website they are happy to send you samples of all their products and it has a store locator that will guide you to a store near you that carries their products.
