Callaway X-14 Irons....Long, Straight, Consistent shots

Written: Jul 08 '01
Pros:Big sweet spot, set down with the ball well, adds distance!
Cons:None
The Bottom Line: I don't think you can go wrong with this set of Irons. I love them and I think you will to.

With all the golf equipment companies out there how are you supposed to know what to buy? Theres Titleist, Taylor Made, Cobra, Ping, Callaway, Top Flite etc. And say you decide on a company such as Callaway. Then you have to choose if you want the X-12's the X-14's what type of shaft, whether you want an offset head or not. So, this can be a very complicated process. Well no matter what the skill level I recommend these Irons.

I went through the same thing that most of you do when buying new clubs. You get a million different opinions and nobody can agree that one club is better than the other. The best way I found to find which one was you was to go to a golf store or a pro shop and borrow one of their demo clubs. Take one of each company, take it down to the driving range, and see which one you like the best. That's how I decided on Callaway and heres why...

Look - Some people have told me that this doesn't matter. However, I feel it's the most important thing. When you put that club behind the ball you want a club that looks good and easy to hit. If you have a weird shaped club or something that you just think doesn't look right, then how are you going to hit the ball? However, if the club looks really nice behind the ball that's added confidence and a better opportunity for a good shot. This wasn't to big of a factor in my decision however because all the clubs are designed well and look nice. From look alone my favorites were Callaway and Ping.

Feel - Each club has a general feel. Some have heavy club heads, some have heavy shafts, maybe they're both heavy, maybe they're both light. And what about the way the club feels at impact. When you hit a good shot does it feel smooth and solid? These are some of the things I considered. The Titleist was the most noticeable, it was an extremely heavy club. It felt good when it was hit well, but after 10 minutes of hitting balls I was exhausted. In my opinion Callaway won this category.

Distance - When I think of distance the first thing I think of is drivers. I was surprised when I saw that there was a 5-10 yard difference with different irons as well. I thought the Top Flites and Cobras went a little shorter than the Callaways and Titleists. So that's something else to consider when shopping around.

Shot Shape - Hook, Draw, Fade, Slice, Topspin, Backspin? What kind of shot do you play. Personally I hit a high fade. I found that some clubs minimized that some increased it. This is the difference between the Callaway X-12's and the Callaway X-14's. The offset head on the X-14's minimizes the amount of fade. And since that was what I was looking for I was more attracted to the X-14's.

Shaft - You can customize these clubs to fit your liking. I went with a relatively stiff Steel shaft. There isn't any reason in particular I chose this shaft. It just seemed to feel the best out of all the ones I tried.

Price - In reading some of the other opinions on this product, a lot of the reviewers seemed to think that these clubs were overpriced. I disagree. These clubs are the same price as every other set of top-of-the-line clubs. So if you want nice clubs this is the price you pay no matter what company. I paid $695 for Pitching Wedge through 3-Iron (8 clubs). I got a pretty good discount from the club because I'm a member at my local club, but they generally run about $850.

Overall - I really don't think you can go wrong with these clubs. No matter what your skill level these would be my top choice. I haven't found anything bad with them or had any problems. I think they're great clubs and I hope that if you choose them you like them as much as I do.
