berniez40's Full Review: Callaway Golf Warbird Plus Golf balls
I really didn't care much for the old Callaway Warbird. It was like playing an overpriced Top Flite XL. Unlike the newer Top Flites, this thing still sported Old Fashioned Dimples, a solid Ionomer Cover that had a bit too much Surlyn in the mix, and just your usual 2 piece ball with distance and absolute zero greenside manners type of attitude. I was glad to let everyone else play them, as they simply did not fit my game or my budget. For the same price I could get Top Flite Gamers which had 3 piece (bettter greenside manners) construction, a seamless cover (straighter ball flight) , and a much beter overall feel. I think the original Core in the Original Warbid was just a bit on the hard side, which made it popular amongst the guys who used to hit the old Pinnacle Power Cores, and Top Flite XL's. It felt familiar to them.
This newer Warbird Plus is absolutely a step in the right direction for Callaway. It's got the Hex Dimples which have been proven to provide for straighter ball flight. It's got a softer cover--still solid Ionomer, but definitely a higher grade with softer feel. It's got a livelier core in the center. You can actually feel the center activate if you get a solid swing on the ball which compresses it to optimal levels. Callaway finally has one of the better 2 piece balls on the market, instead of just another good looking also ran. Here's why weekend hackers, in need of straight line distance and a good bump and run game should try them.
OFF THE WAR CLUB--4 Stars
Don't even try and work this ball. It ain't gonna happen. For openers, even Callaways 3 and 4 piece balls with Hex Dimples fly notoriously straight. It takes a good solid slicked out swing to work those puppies, but when you do--they work well. This baby is built to fly long and straight--end of story. It's trajectory and feel are excellent for the task at hand. The ball is neither firm nor soft coming off of the driver's face. It is informative though. You will know if you hit a scorcher the moment it happens. Unlike the old Warbird, you can feel this ball compress. You will also, within a few holes, be able to tell how high or low you launched it. It's pretty impressive for a two piece ball.
LONG IRONS/METALS/HYBRIDS---5 Stars
If you're playing this ball you probably should not be playing long irons. It really isn't designed for a 2 iron stinger, as it's trajectory is a touch high, and it's greenside spin is almost laughable, however---it works very well off of both the hybrids and fairway metals. Let's face it, when you pull out the old fairway metals--nine times out of ten it's in order to hit a long and straight shot. That is exactly what these balls will do. Don't try and get fancy with a high cut off of the old 3-wood, just go long and strong, and you will be thrilled with what this ball can deliver. The higher trajectory, when combined with hybrid clubs leads to a much softer landing, which helps remove some of this ball's bad greenside manners. It's a great ball for high and mid-cappers getting used to their hybrid clubs.
MIDDLE OF THE ROAD MID IRONS--4 Stars
Good ball for this task too. It's definitely more of a middle of the green ball than a pin seeker. There's just not a lot of spin to it. That's just not the way 2 piece balls operate. There is, however, the opportunity to use it's higher trajectory via a slightly open faced iron that will get it to land softer. Distance wise this ball really is pretty impressive. Better still--the Hex Dimples will certainly help you lock onto target better than the old fashioned variety. The Callaway Hex Dimple, and its corporate sibling Top Flite D2 Dimple in Dimple Patterns, provide for a lot straighter ball flight than the old fashioned variety. My 7 iron thought it was a pretty good ball for punch shots and bump and run.
A WEDGIE FROM YOUR SHORT IRONS AND WEDGES--3 Stars
This ball is too lively for my tastes as concerns the short iron and or wedge approach shots. Even with it's softer feel, similar to the old model, there's a bit more release to this ball than what better players will care to tolerate. I will say that the cover is just as durable as ever, if that sort of thing is important to you. My wedges really layed into this thing a few times, and it still came out without a scratch. Only Cart Paths and Wayward Trees will put a rash on this thing. That kind of durability must have been imported from the old Top Flite Division. I really did have to play the open faced wedge game to get these to stop the way I wanted them to.
FLAT STICK--4 Stars
For a 2 piece ball its not bad off of the flat stick. It has a decent version of the beloved "muted click" off of the face, but there is almost zilcho cling. It's not too lively off the face, but just a touch more cling would've been nice. Had I not spent several months hitting various 2 piece balls during swing and cardio rehab this year, I wouldn't have been able to appreciate what little cling it does offer. As I said earlier--for a 2 piece it's pretty dood. Especially since it has great line holding capabilities.
