funkyfc's Full Review: Callaway HX 2 Piece Golf Balls CAHX2
I was out on my favorite course with my favorite ball (Pinnacle Gold Distance) with a few good friends of mine. One just got a new set of Callaway X-16 clubs and bought some of the HX 2 Red (the distance one) balls to match his new set. Since he was in a happy and giving mood, he tossed a sleeve of his new balls (I know, I think he's crazy!) to try out. I decided, "Why not?"
Interesting design on the ball. I usually play whatever ball is cheap and on sale but these balls have a different look to them. The design of the dimples was nicely laid out. The entire ball had equal gaps of hexagon shaped dimples. Other balls have different sized circular dimples and some have only one sized dimple and they leave gaps of covering. I'm not a physics major but this has got to some type of effect on the flight of the ball. Is it worth more more having the hexagon design? Does it make any difference? I will have a round to find out.
Driving and long shots:
The first hole was a nice straight par four downhill. I swung my Titanium Hawkeye and the ball sounded like it exploded off my club. It sounded awesome. I thought I had just hit the ball over 300 yards and now Callaway had a new best friend in the ball department. My playing partner launched one as well. We were both happy golfers as we strode down the middle of the fairway thinking we were Tiger Woods. When I got up to my ball, it wasn't even close to being as far as I thought. Actually, it was a good 20 yards shorter than my good smacks on a Pinnacle Gold distance. I thought this was supposed to be a distance ball. Well, this happened on all the drives I hit well. There was no increase in distance, it didn't even match the Pinnacle ball in distance.
On bad hits. I sliced these balls very well. These are the best distance balls for spin. When I whacked these balls badly, they were gone. The other fairways should be screaming bloody murder. If I meant to do it, great. If not, watch out! I don't feel comfortable going for the fences with this ball because if I screw up, major bye-bye. The reward-risk for swinging harder is not on the plus side on driving.
Around the green:
This is where I really liked this ball. I could really spin this ball. The problem with the Pinnacle is no control around the green so I would always consider slopes and play shots against them so I could stop the ball on the green. Didn't have to think about that here. Great feel and spin-ability on a distance ball. With my nine iron, I would hit a controlled swing right where I want it and it would spin back perfectly.
Little wedges and chips were easily controlled. This ball is very good with shots requiring touch.
Putting:
For a distance ball, this is very soft. A good putting ball. It rolled true to where I was aiming (although it was the wrong line). It felt very nice on all the putts I had. I only had one three putt in the round. A very good putting distance ball.
Overall:
I don't think this is a distance ball. It is too soft and felt like a spin ball to me. The ball looks interesting, but there is no increase advantage playing the distance ball. I am also not sure about the durability of the ball. After two wedges, there would be big scuffs on the ball. This happens on all balls, but these scuffs were good ones.
I probably will not be using these balls again. I like the harder balls for distance. This ball is probably for the low handicappers who can driving the ball a mile with spin control. Unfortunately, I need a ball to give me more distance.
