| hwz1's Full Review: Callaway Hawkeye VFT 3-PW Irons with Graphite Shaf... |
I have only tried Callaway irons on a few occasions and have had favorable experiences. My father has a set and he likes them and I gave them a try. A good club. Very easy to hit. A solid feel. Nothing flashy. So, I decided that I had to give the Callaway VFT graphite shaft irons a try.
What a mistake, but at the same time a great move. A mistake because I confirmed my belief that a healthy man and/or good player should never have a set of irons that has graphite in the shaft. Why? Well, you have zero feel and the club does not have enough weight to it. You get the feeling that you are swinging nothing more than a shaft. Hence, the problems I had when hitting these irons. They felt light and provided zero feedback since the normal "give" that is present in a steel shaft was not there. I really struggled.
At the same time, I realized that these are the perfect clubs for their target market; those who have trouble getting the ball in the air or hitting it very far. In other words, senior players and women. The clubs have a lower center of gravity which also helps get the ball in the air and the cavity back helps provide added forgiveness. I found that I hit the ball higher than normal with these irons and that they traveled about the same distance as my irons. My guess is that those with slower swing speeds will notice an increase in distance as the lighter clubs will produce more swing speed and, hence, more distance.
One negative that I found and that you might find is that I could not work the ball. Sure, I could move it from right to left, but not gently. I either hit a straight shot or a wicked hook. My normal draw was not to be found. I attribute this to the shaft and my ability as a golfer. The average player and target market should not have a similar experience.
The clubs are good looking and sport a nice insert along the bottom of the back of the club. The back also has a cavity that surrounds the insert. The rest of the club looks like any other iron Callaway has produced. I do not like the feel of the club, but my guess is that those in the target will find that the lighter iron is a benefit and not a negative.
The Callaway VFT graphite irons are a great set of irons for the correct target market. I would stay away from them if I was a strong individual or a good player. The clubs are wonderful for those who struggle to get the ball high in the air. Therefore, I highly recommend these irons for seniors and for women.
