I really love the versatility of this pan. From casseroles prepared on the stove-top and finished in the oven to soups, stews, chili, and all varieties of steamed vegetables, this pan will do it all. The 5 qt capacity provides enough space to cook a large amount of food.
The hard-anodized exterior allows for exceptional heat conduction. All areas on the pan are hot at once, avoiding those hot spots which cause burning of food. The interior is non-stick, which is one of the most important aspects of any pan to me. The non-stick is actually bonded in place, not just sprayed on, which makes it more durable. Cleaning is simple because nothing sticks (I haven't found anything that has yet). This pan is not dishwasher safe so must be washed by hand in hot, soapy water. The handles are all stainless steel and are riveted in place very well, preventing loosening of the handles. They are ergonomic which allows for easy handling. They resist heat thus staying cool even while on the stove top. They do get hot in the oven, so oven mits are needed for removing it.
The steamer insert is all stainless steel as well. Plenty of holes drain liquids from the food. Stainless steel handles here as well. This steamer is great for vegetables - they are held out of the liquid which preserves the vitamins and nutrients allowing for more nutritious meals. Corn on the cob, asparagus, squash, and peppers are some of my favorite things to steam. The steamer cleans quite easily as well. The steamer fits snugly into the pan itself, which prevents the liquid from boiling out around the steamer. I always remove it from the heat before I remove the steamer, to prevent burns.
A glass lid tops off this awesome pan. A stainless steel handle is located on the top and is also riveted in place.
This pan is also perfect for large cuts of meats. For pot roasts, I brown the outside of the meat on the stovetop, then I place it all in the oven and slow-cook it. It comes out so nice and tender. I made a vegetable lasagna in it recently. I placed all of the ingredients in the pan, put it in the oven, and it came out bubbly and delicious. Going from stovetop to oven is a major convenience and improvement over other pans. Please note that this pan is not broiler safe.
I think the only disavantage this pan has is the price. I purchased this pan through Amazon.com for $99.99 plus shipping. I hate spending so much on a pan, but I own other Calphalon pans and they have stood up to the test of time. Buying less expensive pans might sound good at first, but you are more likely going to replace that pan much sooner than you will a Calphalon pan. So, the initial cost is more, but you really do save in the long run.
This pan has made a great addition to my cookware. I recommend it to anyone.
Thanks for reading.
