| limona's Full Review: Calphalon Professional Nonstick 4-1/2-by-8-1/2-Inc... |
I received a pair of these pans for my wedding in 2002. I registered for them and was delighted to receive them. They have a bit of heft to them and their construction is extremely durable. They are very nice loaf pans. Loaf pans see occasional use in my kitchen. I make bread every couple of months and quick breads like banana or cranberry bread every few weeks.
The upside:
What I love most about this pan is its Calphalon, nonstick interior. Everything I have made in this pan comes out when I tap it. I have not needed to run a knife along the side. I do not worry that part of my precious banana bread might stay in the pan. Life is good.
I also love that Calphalon clean-up is easy. I swirl the dishwater around, wipe the sides, and call it good to go.
With these loaf pans I have experienced very even baking of loaves from whole-wheat bread to quick breads. I attribute this to the heavy, quality construction.
The downside:
Nothing in my kitchen is perfect, not even my most loved things, and these loaf pans are no exception. While their Calphalon interior permits mostly easy clean-up, the big flaw of these pans is their corners. The corners are extremely hard to clean. With previous loaf pans I have owned, the pan is made of one piece of metal. This pan is different. It is much heavier and is made of more than one piece of metal. The pieces of metal meet in the corners, and there is a little gap in the bottom of the corners where crumbs will get trapped. I pulled my (clean) loaf pans out of the cupboard to write this review and I noticed teensy, tiny little crumbs in the corners from the last time it was used. I would need a toothpick or a long fingernail to get those crumbs out. Now me, I am not a clean freak. This doesnt bother me; 99% clean is good enough for something that goes in the oven. As far as I'm concerned, those crumbs can live there to keep other crumbs from suffering the same fate, but I know some people take the cleaning of their pans seriously.
As with any of the Calphalon bakeware (and I wish I had known this before I registered for all Calphalon for my wedding), anything you bake is going to brown faster. It may also cook faster. If you like crust, this is great. The crust on anything that comes out of these pans is beautiful. If, however, you prefer your crust a thin, light golden, you might want to go with a shiny, lighter colored loaf pan.
Note the size of the pan. Most loaf pans are 8 x 4 or 9 x 5. This pan is 8.5 x 4.5. If you have a recipe that is pan size specific (and most are not), this is something to note. Cooking times may need adjustment.
This pan is not dishwasher safe.
