| Skyfire747's Full Review: Cambridge SoundWorks CSW MicroWorks |
Armed with 2 tiny cubes and a subwoofer, this system will blow you away! I first read about the Cambridge Soundworks "Soundworks" speakers in PC World magazine and decided that I would like to buy it. (This is the "SoundWorks" system, not "MicroWorks"). When I visited their store in MA, I found an even better system called MicroWorks. I was amazed that for only $149 I could get such a crisp, clear, and deep sound. The retail price is actually $249 but try to find a good deal on them and you can probably pay much less. Even at $249, these speakers are a GREAT deal. I immediately fell in love with the system, and when they told me they do shipping for free, I ordered it immediately. So far it has been wonderful.
If you are reading this article, you have probably already decided in your mind that you want high quality audio. I would definitely recommend this system if you enjoy listening to music a lot- there simply is no rival at this price range. The mids and highs are clear and rich, and the bass is powerful but not harsh or booming. The sound is very rich and warm. I am an audiophile myself, and instead of buying a separate stereo system, I just use my computer to listen to CDs because the Microworks sounds great.
If you are a gamer though, then this will still be an excellent system, but you might want some of the surround sound effects you can get from systems like the Cambridge Soundworks to check out some of the 3d surround sound systems, such as the FPS2000 system. (FPS stands for Four point surround) This system might not have as good sound quality but it adds a nice effect for games. The MicroWorks only has 2 cubes and a subwoofer so it can't get all the 3d effects you can have with 4 speakers.
If you want good audio, but for less money, check out the Soundworks system (yes, Cambridge soundworks actually makes a product called Soundworks- this is separate from the system that I am reviewing called "Microworks"), and if you don't really care that much then don't buy from Cambridge Soundworks at all. You could buy their PCWorks system but it doesn't sound that great so you might as well go for some cheap speakers from Altec Lansing or something like that.
The only drawback with the Microworks system is that there aren't any sophisticated controls for changing the sound on the speakers. There is basically just the volume control knob and that's it. For most people this shouldn't be much of a problem, though.
The MicroWorks system can compete with many home audio systems or more expensive ($600 or more) speaker systems. It doesn't have all the 3d audio effects so it might not be the best choice for avid gamers or DVD watchers who want to hear all the special effects but if you want to listen to some high quality music then the MicroWorks is the best bet.
