I purchased this product because of the reviews I read in stereo review magazine. Setting up the unit was a breeze. Anyone can do it. The unit has a master volume placed inbetween the input connector and the connection to the speakers. There is also a bass control on the subwoofer. For best quality, I suggest you keep the level on the subwoofer at approximately 3/4 the full level.
I was really amazed at the power and quality that the microworks produced. It was room shattering. For great bass sound, I suggest you place the subwoofer at the corner of a wall with the bass port facing away from you. I have always managed to amaze my friends by hiding the subwoofer ( put it under the sofa at the corner of a wall, behind a plant etc). They always wonder where the bass sound is coming from (to the human ear, it is hard to determine where low frequencies are coming from unlike high frequencies). The master volume control is an extremely useful feature - you no longer have to use the computer to change the volume, something that is very difficult when you are playing games. The only drawback is that the subwoofer is always on - it would be better if the subwoofer would turn off when it detects inactivity for a long period - like 5 minutes. (the manufacturer suggests you turn off the system if you will be away for a long time by turning off the switch on the subwoofer)
I have the microworks connected to a soundblaster live!. You could also connect two extra speakers to the soundblaster and watch dvd movies in surround.
I really really like the microworks. I paid $249 for it from buy.com and I couldn't be more satisfied!
