| Turin's Full Review: Cambridge SoundWorks CSW MicroWorks |
What can I say?? These speakers are going for $150 on hifi.com right now, that's $100 off. And for all the notoriety the CSW speakers get, this set has the most powerfull sub and satelites they have to offer in their multimedia line.
In relationships to say the PCWorks, i can get a higher decibal output (my ears went numb after a bit while setting these up) than the PCWorks, and with full bass output. I mean, windows bass settings at normal, and the sub all the way up. To comprehend this, i could hear them outside of my house with the door and windows closed. Was it loud? No, but I could still hear them. It sounded great from a room away. And I have to turn them down when in the room on the pc. At this level, I can play any bass driven song, wether its Korn or Rap (I used Nas -Shootem up and a few Korn songs to primarily set the bass, as those are the hardest pushing bass tracks i have). I had no distortion on the final settings i chose (output mentioned above) on any song i played. At higher levels, the bass started to distort, but I had the sub set at max, so that's to be expected. There is still room for higher output if you need some loud music by adjusting the bass down a little. You still get good bass response, and an even higher output.
What you get:
42watt rms Sub unit, pushing a 6/1/2" driver. This is a very powerfull sub. It can really dig deep to pick up the lower signals, and it can push them out loud. It's housed in a wooden case, so you don't have that tweaky vibration sound you get with the plastic woofers.
13watt rms satelites, these are about 3 sizes bigger than the pc works satelite. As loud as i was blasting these, they had no distortion in the low end of the midrange. This was with my windows bass settings at normal too. I dropped the treble down 1 setting in the windows menu, because to my taste and ears anyway, the music was a little tweaky in the satelites, but this fixed it. That's the beauty of adjustable audio, everyone can set it out to how they like it.
How powerfull was this system? Well, I couldn't figure out what the high pitched distortion was after half an hour of play. I finally discovered it was coming from the cabinet on the wall. My mom's crystal had vibrated up against the glass window of the cabinet and was vibrating against it. Let's just say it was a good thing those cabinets have 2 doors, as i was able to push it back to safety. New speakers intact from my mom's wraith (what she doesn't know won't hurt her, right?) I have not had any other problems with the system.
Summary:
If you only need a 2 speaker setup, the microworks are top of the line. IF you want a 4 speaker setup, go with the Klipsch priced at $250, though they are on back order. I wish i had the room for a 4 speaker setup, though i am perfectly happy with my new system. Another complaint i have about the klipsch, is that if were going to be shelling out 250 for a 4 speaker setup, I might as well get a 5.1 ac3 capable setup for my dvd player, wich is what i originally wanted (don't have the room though). In order to get a 5.1 system at the same quality as the klipsch though, I would have to go with the Sirroca dts system (also does dolby digital (ac3) and dolby prologic (4.1). That's $650 though. So for me, I have a great sound system that takes up little room relatively speaking (sub is about the size of my mid tower); the system fills the room and then some, provides strong clear bass, and costs me only $150 (that's with free ups ground shipping). I just can't beat that deal.
One last evil thought in mind, if i ever do get the room, a quadraphonic soundcard and another one of these... can you say structural damage? To the future!
