I purchased this set for my girlfriend a couple of years ago due to the need for a decent pair of PC speakers. She was becomming sick of listening to her music through her tinny laptop speakers, and being a college student, space was a prime.
As they say, good things come to those who wait.
These speakers are TINY!!!! The satelites are roughly 3 inches square, and the subwoofer is roughly the size of a shoebox. They come packaged decently, and are provided with good quality speaker wire. The old standard volume control on the wire is provided with the soundworks speaker set.
Those of you familiar with the CSW Soundworks know that it was designed by Henry Kloss, a legend in the audio world. He is an audiophile known the world over, responsible for the startup of advent, Cambridge Soundworks and KLH ( he is the "k")
The design heritage is evident in the sound of this system. While I prefer my Bose Companion, this is by NO way a bad sounding system.
The highs are extended, and will definatly let you know if you are using an inferior source. They will become bright and edgy if using compressed media, such as a 128 KB MP3. On a decently recorded CD, the highs are reasonably extended, and it is obvious that Kloss made the right decision. He chose to roll off the highs and cross the driver over lower in the midrange instead of creating a frequency gap.
Midrange is not quite as good as the highs, where some resonance can be heard from the enclosures. Vocal and guitar recordings verify this. Diana Krall's "Love Scenes," which is a reference recording of mine, reveals a very slight chestiness caused by this resonance. This resonance is not prominent enough to be a deal breaker for many.
The bass is also quite good, especially for the size of the woofer unit. Proper placement is key with the unit. If it is placed too close to a corner, it will become unacceptably boomy, as it is a bandpass woofer. However, Kloss designed it without reaching up too far into the midrange, so it is easy to hide.
all in all, for the price the Soundworks is a good performing PC speaker system
