About Me: All you need is love... but a little dark chocolate couldn't hurt.

A well designed pack for Rim Running, Rim Hiking, or Rim Riding.

Written: Jan 27 '04 (Updated Jan 27 '04)
Pros:Strong, comfortable up to 25-30lbs, large water reservoir, oversized (7 gallon) cargo storage capacity.
Cons:Price, bulky and heavy for a hydration pack, can be hot in the summer.
The Bottom Line: The Rim Runner is a good balance between all out camping packs and hydration packs. It makes compromises yet still gets my recommendation for the average outdoor enthusiast.

----- Introduction to the Rim Runner -----

Camelbak is the current standard for quality hydration packs, with over 40 different models currently available. In years past they mostly sold thin packs just big enough for various sized water reservoirs, but lately Camelbak has released quite a few backpack/hiking pack designs for the active outdoor enthusiast. Several popular models include the M.U.L.E., Blowfish, Trophy, SnoBound ski pack, and the Rim Runner which I’m reviewing here. All the large packs mentioned here are built to carry cargo, and aren’t meant to be used for only hydration. Camelbak sells many smaller packs such as the 50oz HydroBak, 70oz Classic, and the popular 70oz Lobo that are much smaller and lighter if all you need is hydration.

----- Rim Runner features -----.

The Rim Runner pack weighs 2.5 lbs unloaded, and a bit less than 10 lbs with a full load of water. The pack body measures 18.5” tall, 11” wide, and between 6” and 9” deep depending on how much cargo volume is stuffed inside. Total inside cargo storage volume is 7 gallons (1729 cubic in), divided between the large main compartment and the smaller rear compartment. There is also one water bottle sized stretch-mesh pocket on each side of the pack, which can be used to store gloves, snacks, or small baggies of food. As with most Camelbak models, this one features the 5-point bungee net on the back for coat or rain gear storage. Comfort features include: Air Support back panel with lumbar support and internal load-bearing frame sheet, Dual padded extra-wide shoulder straps for load stability, 1.5" wide waist belt and sternum straps to reduce lateral movement, moisture wicking mesh back panel keeps you cool in normal summer heat. The included water reservoir is Camelbak’s newest 100oz Omega™ reservoir, which has an oversized mouth for easy loading and cleaning. The water delivery system is the new Big-Bite Valve™ with built in HydroLock™ water shut-off to prevent leakage while transporting. As sizes go, the Rim Runner has the biggest water reservoir available, and holds 3 liters of water or your favorite beverage. I guess that’s all the features, so lets talk about actually using the pack.

----- My experiences with the Rim Runner -----

I originally bought this pack for a 4-day bachelor party/camping trip on a remote state owned island. I knew I’d be hiking long distances since bikes and vehicles are banned on the island, so hydration was important. I also planned on taking lunch and various other small items, so I wanted moderate cargo capacity. After looking at several shops, I finally settled on the Camelbak Rim Runner model as the one that fit me best. It was a little larger than I had planned on, but I like the way it fit my back and the huge 100oz water reservoir was a bonus.

So you ask, how did it the Rim Runner work on my island trip? It worked great, but the hydration aspect was unusable. Little did we know there was no running water or wells on the island. I was quite happy some of us had brought large amounts of bottled water and drinks, and when hiking I kept bottles of water in the hydration reservoir area of the Rim Runner. At times I had up to 40lbs in my pack, and for the most part it was quite comfortable. I will say it’s not very good at keeping your back cool in 80 degree or higher temperatures, but I expect to be somewhat hot with any backpack on.

I have since used my Rim Runner for long cycling trips with friends or just out exploring, and for these ventures it works very well. With 100oz (3/4gal) of water I have enough to last me 3-4 hours at a normal recreational cycling pace. The side stretch-pockets are great for storing two extra water bottles filled with energy drinks or more water. The main storage compartment is one large full length cavity with no dividers. I wouldn’t mind a more small pockets on the front or rear wall to store keys and cell phones in, but the included internal organizer does a good job at keeping your small stuff separated in all but the bumpiest of terrain. Instead of a key pocket Camelbak included a key hook sewn into the main cargo area. The rear pocket is quite a bit smaller, and is made for the aforementioned cell phones, GPS units, or even food items.

The exterior of the Rim Runner is a water resistant material that sheds rain quite well. I’ve never left it out in a storm for long periods of time, but for the 10-15 minutes that it takes me to find shelter from the rain it has always kept my stuff dry. Since the water reservoir is the innermost cavity, it’s very well insulated from the sun. Your water will stay cool a long time, most of the day in average summer temperatures. A feature I’ve really enjoyed is the zipper on the back panel. After unzipping and pulling the panel open you can install your fully loaded water reservoir with ease. No more coaxing your reluctant reservoir into the tiny opening, only to find your water tube coiled at the bottom. This is a great feature and a real timesaver.

The polyurethane Omega reservoir is easy to clean and fill thanks to the oversize mouth. For cleaning you can stick your hand inside and scrub the reservoir walls. The screw cap has a built-in tether to keep if from getting lost when not in place. Water stays tasting fresh much longer than in older Camelback models, thanks to the Omega reservoir and the PureFlow™ water tube which also has a polyethylene liner. You can use the included 100oz reservoir or downsize to a 70oz if you want a lighter pack and a little more room in the cargo area.

----- The negatives -----

First off, if it had been my choice I would have named this pack the Rim Walker. If I didn’t say it strongly enough earlier, I’ll tell you again… this is a BIG Camelbak. It’s quite a bit heavier than most of their thin hydration packs, and much bulkier especially when loaded with cargo. Even if it’s light items such as clothing or shoes, it moves around a good bit and does wear on your shoulders after a couple hours. If you’re planning on maneuvering in tight spaces, cycling vigorously, running or jogging, this pack is too big for you. For most people I would recommend a small water pack and a larger cargo carrying hydration pack such as the Rim Runner.

If you’re not planning on using the hydration part very much, you might want to look at a standard backpack instead. For $80 - $90 you most likely could buy a larger pack or one with more features and customized for the sport of your choice. If you already own a good quality pack, you can just buy the Omega Reservoir and add it to your existing backpack. It won’t fit quite as well, but it will save you $60.

Other than the price and weight, I really don’t have anything bad to say about the Rim Runner. It has served me well and works great when used in the proper circumstances.

----- Bottom Line -----

The Rim Runner is a good looking pack that can be used in many ways, although it’s not the best choice for just hydration. You’d never fit this pack under a coat, so it will always be outside your clothing. As I’ve said in my other reviews, all of my Camelbaks have been very durable, with no fading or tearing of the exterior fabric. The reservoirs and bite valves are all available as individual parts in case they are damaged or lost. Dogs tend to like the taste of Camelbak reservoirs, so keep them away from your pets. (long story, don’t ask)

I recommend the Rim Runner as a multifunction backpack/water station or as a hiking and camping aid. It’s great for college students that love the outdoors, since you can use it all week for classes and add the water reservoir for weekend recreation. Take a look at some of the other cargo models from Camelbak, as several new ones have been released since I bought my Rim Runner. I don’t regret buying mine, and as long as Camelbak makes innovative and reliable products I’ll continue to purchase their products.
